RE: You gotta fight for your right to text message
Kinda makes you wonder how we made it all those years without cell phones to "stay in touch," don't it? I cannot think of any logical reason why a student would need a cell phone at school. They create a huge distraction in the classroom, and I definitely think they should be banned from schools. Around here, I see seven and eight year old kids carrying cell phones. Now why would a kid of eight need a cell phone???

It's a new world for onething and the other would be incase of another columbine incident....These children with phones could help in case another incident occurs... My children have phones and as a parent I do feel better when they are out and about if something might happen to them or a friend of theirs they don't have to run and look for a phone to call for help....
RE: You gotta fight for your right to text message
No offense Smokeman , but another Columbine incident is statistically more rare than your chance of hitting the Irish sweepstakes , and on average there is a pay phone from which anyone can make a free 911 call by law nearly every 50 yards in this country . The question was: Does a student have a right to carry a cell phone in school orare they being frivolous ?, not whether or not you think it's a good idea .

RE: You gotta fight for your right to text message
hey kev, I think they have the right to carry them but they may lose it if they cannot control the incoming calls during a class or assembly...I would almost think that turning them off at the start of a class should suffice...no text messages either that is like the proverbial passing of notes during class and not paying attention... both gets ya detention...LMAO....
RE: You gotta fight for your right to text message
When I got home last night from work, there was a girl sitting in her car, on the cell phone, with aflat tire, in front of my house. I walk over, and offer help. Change the tire for her, and inform her, she's a senior here in town, she should have her dad show her how to change a tire, instead of calling him for help. Never know when you'll get stranded with a flat, and wind up ina cell hole, with no signal! They have their advantages, but that only goes as far as service signal. Then what are you gonna do. I think kids need to learn to be a bit more self sufficiant, instead of relying on the good ole cell phone to bail them out.

If the question is still specifically about having
a cell phone at school I say NO.
It's too much of a distraction and teachers
have their hands full already. I know, I've
heard any number of scenarios thatmake
this or that kid an exception but there is more
down side than real necessity.
No pagers, no cell phones, no cameras.
Just my opinion.
RE: You gotta fight for your right to text message
Students don't have a right to possess a cell phone in schools. The schools set the rules, and parents can lobby the administration to change those rules if so desired. The fact of the matter is that student cell phones are a priviledge.
If the students don't like it, well, then they can grow up and convince Congress to amend the Constitution to protect the right to carry a cell phone.
RE: You gotta fight for your right to text message
Do they have a right to have one in school? NO!!!!
That being said they do allow kids to havea cell phone where my kids go to school, but they are not allowed to be turned on even during lunch unless a teacher or administrator allows it for some sort of family emergency. This to me is reasonable.
