The socialist state of Boston wants the operators of MySpace.com to raise the minimum age of it's members to protect children from trolling child molestors . Can anyone tell me why this is not only very wrong but doomed to fail anyway ? Hmmm ?

Idiocy at best. I was looking at porn online when I was 15. When a site asks whether you're 18 or 21, you lie--any kid can figure that out.
The issue of online child predation will never end unless parents get their heads out of their @#$%& and start paying attention to what their kids are doing on the computer. We've all heard the horror stories, but too few adults take those seriously. It goes back to the old "it'll never happen to me" (or my child) mentality. They're going to have to realize one of these days that perverts across the globe or down the street can shop for minor victims privately and anonymously--unless adults are supervising their children's Internet usage.
When I was 15 Al Gore had yet to created the internet. Actually the computer language i was taught at 15 was basic.
Hehe, before the Internet, I was logging into local BBSes. My friends from schooland I would scan photos froma copy of Hustler and then upload them to trade. Ah, the joys of youth--hacking, piracy, and scanned porn.
I started with Amiga-BASIC at 13 and moved to QuickBasic 4.5 soon after.
Hey , y'all had computers ? WHen I was in high school the closest thing they had since PCs were still a gleam in Woz' eye was an old teletype connected to a database somewhere . Only the seniors got to play with it , and all they did was play games . We did get to learn how to decypher teletype ribbons though , I remember thinking at the time "Yeah , this crap is gonna come in handy some day ..."

Little different than meeting at the malt shop for a chocolate shake Iff , and predators prowled those too . What I despise here is the goobernmental nannyism , MySpace is under no obligation to appease the city of Boston . Monitor what you're kids are doing and where they're going on the net , guide them past the pitfalls and predators have no chance to operate .

I don't know Kevin, there may be some validity to this. Of course you aren't going to stop teenagers from surfing the web and LOOKING at whatever they want. I just don't think the looking part is what they are concerned about. It when they start POSTING personal info such as name, address, phone numbers, pics etc... that the danger starts. This info enables criminals to target specific children. Myspace is basically one huge McDonalds menu for pedophiles.

All the more reason to be a responsible parent and teach your kids what to watch for , Bearklr . You can't watch them all the time , so they have to be smart enough to know what to do , and more importantly what not to do .

Kevin, I agree with you 100% that the ultimate responsibility for the children fall on the parent. It's just too bad that any knucklhead that knows how to pull his pants down can have a kid which is why measures such as this are in place. There are countless laws out there for kids that I call common sense laws. These too should fall on the parents and not need to be a law but ultimately they save children from their parents ignorance. Look at carseat laws or helmet laws for bicycles. I'm sure the carseat law alone has saved hundreds of infants from an early grave. The children are too immature to think rationally and they can't always rely on their parents to make the right decisions. They shouldn't have to pay for mom and dad's stupidity.
