Default Burlington, VT: Illegal Immigrant Sanctuary?

Vermont is too small of a state to handle an illegal influx. It would overload our infrastructure, and our authorities are so not ready to deal with MS13.

Burlington, Vermont - May 2, 2006
Mayor Bob Kiss wants to see Burlington become a "sanctuary city" to provide a safe place for undocumented immigrants to work and live without fear of deportation.
Demonstrators welcomed the announcement from Burlington's new mayor.
"I hope we can move forward to become a sanctuary city in the United States of America," said Mayor Kiss, a progressive from Burlington.

With an immigration reform protest as his backdrop, Mayor Kiss told supporters he planned to make the Queen City a so-called "sanctuary city," too.
It means a policy could be adopted calling for city employees, including police officers, not to report illegal aliens to the federal authorities.
"If we can help them build a better life I think we should do that," said Mayor Kiss. "It really is at the beginning. But it's timely and issues being discussed across the country encourage us to look at this carefully as well."

Mayor Kiss instructed the city's lawyer to investigate the feasibility of such a move.
Currently, police are required to report undocumented workers to immigration authorities. A duty Burlington Police officers say will continue regardless of whether the city adopts sanctuary status.
"We contact border patrol and immigration and customs for overstays or violation of working papers or illegal entries," said Deputy Chief Walt Decker, of the Burlington Police Dept. "We are bound to uphold federal regulations and to make those reports to those agencies."

Thousands of illegal aliens reportedly work in Vermont -- many in fields and on farms. Immigrant advocates argue they do important work that Americans don't want to do. And supporters of the sanctuary-city-idea say it will enable those immigrants to be more productive members of society. For example -- they can report crimes without fear of deportation.
"It's not necessarily protection," said Mayor Kiss. "Sanctuary status doesn't effect criminal issues. If someone commits a crime, they still suffer the penalties."

But others worry -- if you build it, they will come. Saying a sanctuary city would open the flood gates for illegal aliens in Vermont.
Mayor Kiss dismisses those claims.
"I wouldn't see it as a magnet city," he said.

Other sanctuary cities in the U.S. offer public services and benefits to illegal aliens. Mayor Kiss says it might be done without using city money -- relying on non-profits and other agencies instead. That still raises cost concerns.
"Our city like many others struggles financially to deal with services we provide now," said Deputy Chief Decker. "Anything that might encourage people to move to our city, who might also be within a social need category, needs to factor in where are the resources once they get here."
The city attorney is investigating the potential costs too. And the Mayor says making Burlington a sanctuary city would need to be okayed by the city council.
There are quite a few "sanctuary cities" in the U.S. -- including Los Angeles and Denver, Colorado. Each city is run differently. So, Mayor Kiss is confident Burlington will figure out a way to make it work without breaking any laws.

Seriously, shouldn't a mayor have at least a basic grasp of economics, logistics, and reality in general in order to take office?

We do have a republican governor who will probably squash this plan, but I fear that merely making the statement is enough to open the flood gates.

This is what happens when hippies get together and vote.

Since hizzoner is advocating illegal activities perhaps some responsible citizen should drop a ten ton dime on his ass .

New England is a beautiful region, but those politicians are going to destroy their own communities with this kind ofpandering.

Yesterday was election day for the mayoral and city council races in Herndon, Virginia. The mayor and five out of six councilmembers put their support behind a county-funded day laborer pick-up (drunken loitering?) site last year and finishedbuilding it just recently. Illegal immigration is a major topic within the DC metro area, and legal Americans are pulling their hair out over the issue. To make a long story short, today Herndon has a new mayor-elect and five new city councilmembers.

The moral of the story--get out there to the polls and kick these bums out!

There's not much I can personally do, as I don't live in Burlington and can't vote their mayor out. Heck, the town I actually live in is too small to even have a mayor.

At least local law enforcement isn't behind the idea. Unfortunately, they could be fired and replaced with those friendly to the mayor's plans.

We also have a fairly level headed governor who will hopefully step in.

However, what happens if illegals just start showing up en masse?

Take advantage of the fact that you don't need a permit to carry a concealed handgun. If you can't ditch the politicians, you're pretty much on your own.

My town was full of rednecks five years ago, and today illegals outnumber everyone else in my neighborhood. All I can do is keeping banging on the politicians' doors and do what I need to protect myself and my wife when MS-13 rolls through (they robbed a gas station with a machete last month ).

I would think that this type of announcement would simply be symbolic since immigration is supposed to be a federally regulated issue and not the domain of local politicians. In other words, i don't think that the INS agents are going to stop at the city limits and wring their hands in frustration.

Ironically, out unchecked carry laws will be changed once MS13 does show up.

Places like Wyoming and North Dakoata are starting to look real good.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against anyone of any color or nationality, as long as they obey the laws and pull their own weight in society. All the legal immigrants I know are good hardworking people and my hat's off to them.

It's just the parasites I can do without.

All of us in southern VT are pretty disgusted with that. They have no idea what can of worms they are opening.

By any chance do you agree with my assertion that Burlington isn't really Vermont?

I'm no right wing neocon, but most of the people there are too far left for even me to stand.
