1949 0.27 per gallon (leaded regular)
1974 0.53 per gallon (leaded regular)
1980$1.25 per gallon (unleaded regular)

2000 $1.51 per gallon (unleaded regular)

Pretty cool. I ran across this calculator that determines what the relative value of products are.

A $.27/gallon of gas in 1949 equals a $2.21 gallon today.

I wonder what the past prices would reflect on an inflated rate equal to todays dollar. I bet it is still a far cry from what we are paying today.

Notice how the founding of OPEC affects the latter third of that graph . Funny how prices stayed relatively flat for over 50 years and then the sudden upward trend from '72 on . Maybe OPEC itself is the enemy of cheap oil . Hmmm ... [:-]

BTW , that "adjusted for inflation" crapola is meaningless drivel to me , I pay in "right now" dollars , not yesterday's . Any way you choose to crunch the numbers the result is the same , too gawdammed high.
