Saudi releases 500 al-Qaida sympathizers

Apr. 26, 2006 at 10:15AM

Saudi Arabia released 500 al-Qaida sympathizers after they underwent religious counseling to bring them back to the moderate path of Islam.

Â*Â*Â*Â*Â* Member of the counseling committee Mohammed Bin Yehya Nujeimi was quoted Wednesday by al-Jazeera as saying the committee, affiliated with the interior ministry, had conducted dialogue with 800 Saudis who had allegedly sympathized with prisoners convicted in cases of terrorism.

Â*Â*Â*Â*Â* Out of the total, 500 were released following intensive studies and counseling sessions which moderated their views.

Â*Â*Â*Â*Â* Nujeimi said those released were informed that they will be closely monitored by security forces, in addition to being continuously contacted by members of the counseling committee.

Â*Â*Â*Â*Â* He said instructions were given by Deputy Interior Minister for Security Affairs Prince Mohammed bin Nayef to help reintegrate those released in the society, including returning them to their original jobs or securing new work opportunities for them.

Â*Â*Â*Â*Â* Interior ministry sources said the release came after months of counseling by elite Saudi religious leaders to convince them to abandon extremist ideas.

Â*Â*Â*Â*Â* Saudi Arabia has been conducting a nationwide security campaign to crack down on al-Qaida extremists since it was first rocked by terrorist bombings in May 2003.

Â*Â*Â*Â*Â* Since then, al-Qaida terrorist operations have resulted in the killing of 120 people and injured 255 others.

I'm not sure what to think about this. Obviously, releasing anyone having anything to do with al Qaeda goes against my gut instinct, but Ineed to know what the Saudi government is up to here. They'vebeen cracking down on Islamic terrorists and their Wahabi supporters over the past few years, but this seems to go in the face of those efforts.

The bottom line is that no amount of counseling can change a fanatical Islamicist's mind, so either they're wasting their time or "converting" the fringe elements that were harmless to begin with. If the Saudis can change the hearts and minds of people, that's all fine and good, but how about chalking up some more kills and captures ofactive al Qaeda members?

Don't you just love it when religion and government are one and the same?????[&:]
You're over-simplifying things. The House of Saud is not a overtly religious institution. Those princes and sheiks and assorted hangers-on don't give a damn about Islam--all they're concerned with isstaying in the royal palace.

The reason they put up with extremest elements is because 40% of Saudis are fanatical Wahabis (like bin Laden). Imagine if 40% of Americans decided to sack Washington and occupy the White house. Now imagine that scenario with a group of third world dictators who are barely holding onto power as it is.

The Saudi royal family isn't the greatest government out there, but they sure beat the bin Laden crowd. I don't know what it'll take to stabilize the Middle East, if it's even possible, but for the time being we're better off with kings than we are terrorists.
