Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default Oh what a tangled web

When oil in the middle east was cheap we quit developing our own energy sources here.We didn't need to pay higher prices to drill for our own oil we could buy cheap oil from abroad.
Now that we have no way to tap our own oil and gas prices are killing our economy.Every one wants to find our own power sources.

Think real hard about this as you shop at China - mart.

We don't need to support American made products because we can buy cheap Chinese shi!.And it will be cheap until we loose all ability to produce anything here.

If we fail to learn from the past we are doomed to repeat it.

That's like sayingwe should've stayed an agricultural nation like we were in1776, instead of welcoming the industrial revolution. Countries, their influences, their capabilities changed over the course of several generations. We can't stay in the past simply because of a few potential problems down the road.

We can produce all the oil we need within the U.S. and still have some left over when we change over the a predominantly ethanol, hydrogen, or whatever based power source in say 25 to 50 years. Yep, gas prices are high now, but that's no guarantee that they'll be high forever. The important thing is to keep partisan politicians from tearing the country apart while we work on solving theproblems in America. Instead of pointing the finger around Washington, it's about time we got to work.

The fact of the matter is that if Americans stopped shopping at Wal-Mart, not only would they be paying record gas prices, but record prices on consumer goods. Wal-Mart saves people money--that's why they got so popular in the first place.

Manufacturing is history in this country. Go to school, work hard, and use your mind. Otherwise, you'll get left behind. No one is being paid a lifetime worth of income and benefits simply to stand on an assembly line anymore. That's just the way life is in the 21st century.

I am sure China will be glad to build or next defence systems for us .We will save money too.A country that fails to manufacture products will fail to prosper.
Manufacting is not just standing at assembly lines.I spend my day programing my own C.N.C. milling machines. Most tolerances are held to within .0005.
We produce products with software from Teck Soft for 2D work & Solid Cam for 3d Solid models. If you think this is childs play send my a P.M. address and I will send you some demos to look at.

Have a good one , Jim

I guess my point is that a rocket scientist dosn't start out building rockets.
You must build a base for desigeners & builders to start. We are losing this base and when the base falls we will all fall.

That's the thing--just about any booming manufacturer is producing specialty goods, like electronic hardware, military systems as you say, etc. What America doesn't do well is produce cheapcrap that doesn't last. Face it, most Americans don't need CNC machining in their clothing or housewares or whatever else they buy at Wal-Mart.

By the way, I wasn't directing the assembly line comment to you. I was being hypothetical for the sake of discussion. You're a good guy, and I enjoy debating you.

b'wana you are wise. I work in the Information Technology industry. Nobody speaks English here anymore. The universities all still teach IT and offer degree programs for it, and people are taking the courses, but the pay for those jobs is low. I"ve seen 'the industry' lay off a 100k guy and replace him with a 20k foreign consultant. The 'official' position of the industry is, believe it or not, that Americans can't do this type of work as well as 'certain' foreign people can. That's a self-fulfilling prophesy...if you can't earn a living with your IT degree, then IT will fail as degreed subject matter. American kids WON"T aspire to be IT professionals, and at that point, 'the industry' will be right because we won't have anybody here who can do the work anymore.
The same is true with manufacturing...we live in an expensive place...we pay for cheap crap because we want to spend elsewhere or save. The cheapest crap comes from abroad...so when we buy all that Chinese junk, we CHOOSE the demise of American manufacturing and American products. I believe that as Americans, we should support our own industries. If it says "Made in China" or "Made in Phillippines" or "Made in France" then we can choose to leave the crap on the shelves. I'm curious...how many of the posters in this forum still buy American cars ? Heavy industry in this country is dead...we buy our steel from ***an; even Zeiss has it's lenses ground by Yashika. What an embarrassment...but that's Capitalism, right ? I choose to drive my American cars, and I look for clothing specifically made in America and where I cannot buy an American-made product, I at least look for an American company brand-name on the label. Is anyone out there a 'pure' capitalist, who believes that cost and profit alone should be a determining factor ? Wanna stake your job on that ? Fact is, there is no job in this country that can't be done cheaper someplace else. One day soon, it'll be my job...how many more jobs should we lose to cheap foreign labor ? Should we protect ourselves ? The Chinese say it's unfair trade practice to protect ourselves, yet, EVERY OTHER COUNTRY IN THE WORLD protects it's industries. Go figgya...maybe I'll move to Bangalore and learn to speak Hindi....
