Beijing is encouraging development of coal liquefaction to help curb a growing reliance on oil imports. Analysts say within a decade it could be making up to 1.2 million bpd of coal-based synthetic fuel, or nearly 50 percent of 2005 imports.
RE: World may turn back clock for liquid coal future
Coal is one thing that the Americas havein abundance , my company sells underground support systems and repairs/sells mining equipment of various types , you wouldn't believe how much coal some mines can dig in a single day . All that stands in the way now is the cost of processing it , and that cost is falling.
Ironic , isn't it ? From a certain POV we may actually have to revisit the gas lamp era of the past to ensure our energy future .

Whats the impact on the enviro? What did the nazis make their synthetic fuel in WW-2 out of?

All mining operations are required to reclaim the land that they've used to as close to it's original condition as possible , mining itself doesn't cause much of an enviro problem unless something goes wrong such as a sludge pool accidentally draining into a waterway or a coal mine fire . Using the coal is where the enviro impact will occur , and as cost effective refining measures come along the end product will become cleaner . Burning any hydrocarbon fuel produces pollutants , what comes out of the tailpipe or stack depends on the technology through which it passes .

A corporation called Future Gen is in the process of deciding where to build their first coal fired generating plant. There are four communities within an hours drive of me bidding and in the running along with sites being considered in other areas and in other states. Though this has little to nothing to do with powering automobile engines, it could be a step in that direction later on. Future Gen says the technology is there for 90% emission free and maybe up to 0% emissions free coal fired plant. When their plant is finally up and running in a few years it could be a huge stepping stone in other directions.
It has been said that the U.S has more coal reserves than Saudi Arabia has in oil reserves! Of course coal speculators will most likely drive the price of coal up as they have been doing to the oil.[:@]
