JBG you are so very uninformed, and you picked the wrong group to do that. I worked in ***an off and on for five years and spent a whole summer on Okinawa, and a whole year on the Mainland of ***an.
The majority of the Nihon-jing, are OK with us Amerika-ge-jing. There is a Nationalist Party that runs around all the cities blaring out Nationalistic slogans at all hours of the night, but they are a minority and probably do not even reach 10% of the total population.
Most of the ***anese want us, they may notlove us, but they do know they need us, not only for the CHina thing, but to keep their northern Islands and maybe get some land back from Russia.
In Okinawa, (which is a little like PR commonwealth equilivant) there is about a 30% against the US, but they have always been there, and about 50% supporting the US, because those know that the US goes so goes the money, and about 20% who don't care and are live and let live folks. These are great ***anese folks to know, if ya go there meet one learn a lot and live a little!
FYI, there is not only 7000 marines there, there are 2 other Marine bases, 3 army camps, 2 rec centers and a couple of Air Bases thrown in too! Kadena is huge, and yes the "locals" are ther to make money, huslte, and have fun and they don't care who with. There is a little bar I used to go to called "American Bar", it serves Guiness (the only place that does on the Island) on tap. But I like Sapparo beer better. This bar is FULL every nibht of yes ex-pat Americans, but a herd of Locals too. Great Place!
Besides, if the Americans leave, just up the road on Gate Street (gate 2 I think) from the American Bar there is .... Bill Clinton Peace Park, dedicated at the G-8 summit when I was there working!! So that would probably go. Oh and President Bill Clinton was the one that negociated and signed the treaty extensions to keep the US bases as they were with the givback of theOkniwian land stated below and saw to it that it was funded. They made a big deal out of it during that G-8 summit and it was in all the Papers, Asahi Times, Yomuri Shinbun, and Stars and Stripes. Wasn't that YOUR guy?
We are turning back land to the Okinawians and to the ***anese as well, Most of these "movements" and "outrages" boil down to a local who wants the land. The last land we turned over in Okinawa was supposed to be to set up an "International Free Trade Zone". It ended up in a local's possessionthat had political clout and connections, he turned it into a very exclusive resort and golf course, he sold out his protesters and supporters. They were upset.
Quote:
***an hosts 50,000 US troops, including 14,460 marines, the largest marine contingent based overseas.
Nearly all the marines there are located on Okinawa, where residents have expressed a desire for a rapid reduction in US forces because of long-standing...

You forgot Iwakuni, Sasebo, Irozaki, Akazaki, Tsrumi, Zama, Yokota, Yokusuka, Misawa, Hachinohe, US ConsulatS and Embassy, and several others I have never even been to!! We leave ***an looses out on a HUGE amount of bucks. They want us to stay.
As for your troop numbers we have a boatload more than the number you quoted and currently the largest posting of Marines off of US soil is Iraq.
I would buy you a clue on this topic, but it would be money wasted. If you are fgonna talk about something you had better know what you are yaking about, because it is a big world, and you never know, someone on the other end may have actually been there and knows the story for real.
The ***anese are a wonderful people and as a country a great friend. The ***anese love us awhole lot more than they hate us. And they are real, unlike the French! And unlike the French, THEY are GRateful!
