Default North Carolina and Tennessee concealed weapon question

I have decided to leave the mountains of Virginia and move a little further south and have narrowed my likely choices to NC. or TN. One of the factors that will help me make my ultimate decision is: How restrictive the gun laws are in each state.

I currently have a concealed weapon permit for the state of Virginia and have hadone for Georgia in the past.

I attempted to look up my question on both a "google" word search and the N.R.A. website, but I did'nt seem to be able to find a difinitive answer at either place.

Then it occured to me...What better place to ask than here.

So, here are my questions for whomever will be gracious enough to answer them;

(North Carolina and Tennessee)

-What are the requirements to obtain a C.C.W.

-How restrictive are the laws once you do have one. (Meaning where can a person carry as opposed to not carry)

-What are the laws regarding simply keeping a handgun in a vehicle with, or without a C.C.W.

-Does the state require registration of long guns, hand guns ect.

Thanks in advance.

Dave, in Tennessee:

To obtain a concealed carry permit, you first have to complete a one-day handgun safety course. This is a pretty simple course that concludes with a simple written exam and a shooting exam. The cost of the course is $75. You can then apply for the concealed carry permit. It costs $115 and requires a photograph and fingerprints. It takes 60 days for you to receive your permit once you apply. It can then be renewed every four years for a cost of $50.

Once you have your permit, you can carry a concealed weapon anywhere except schools (obviously), anywhere where businesses have posted signs not allowing handguns (banks, etc.), facilities where alcoholic beverages are sold by the drink (doesn't include convenience stores, grocery stores, etc. that sell alcohol), and government properties such as courtrooms.

With a concealed carry permit, you can store your handgun in your vehicle at your disgression. Without a concealed carry permit, your handgun must be stored separate from your ammunition.

Guns aren't required to be registered.

If you decide to move to Tennessee, you should check out the Cumberland Plateau area . . . God's country for sure.

BenGarrett's response could be applied almost exactly to NC. I think the course I took was a two day course though.

One thing to keep in mind in NC, if you have a CCW and you are carrying, you cannot drink any alcohol at all and still keep the CCW. That means if you've got your 9mm under your seat and stop for one beer on the way home, you can lose your permit.

It's renewable every 5 years.

I just went to one of the links that PiedmontPete added to his post and see that Forsyth County (my home county) has revoked 264 permits. Throughout the whole state (100 counties) only 727 have been revoked.

I've heard that the sheriff's department is aggressive about taking away permits but I didn't know they were THAT aggressive.

Wonder what gives?
