Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 15 "” In a crowded House hearing room, Representative Christopher H. Smith, Republican of New Jersey, unleashed a scathing condemnation of four American Internet and technology companies "” Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and Cisco "” for a "sickening collaboration" with the Chinese government and for "decapitating the voice of the dissidents" there.

With the idea that we are trying to spread democracy around the world, should internet/tech companies be asked to provide an assist by refusing to to bow to Chinese demands?

It would be interesting to see just how much sway these companies might have in societies where freedoms are so easily restricted. Would they be willing to give up thehuge profits projected for theChinese market for the good old USA?

Notech company is going to sacrifice international market share voluntarily. That would becounter-productive to everyone involved in the business, and with today's global competition, it could provefatal to the company.

I really don't see how the federal government has any business legislating the issue. That is, unless Congress stops dancing around the China question and starts regarding the country as the nation of anti-westerncommunist oligarchs it really is.

Still, Ford operated truckplants in Germany well into World War 2. I suppose that where there's a will, there's a way.
