RE: Dick cheney
From the limited information I have it sounds like a dumb accident. It should not have happened. Not to beat up too much, but shooting someone at 30 yards who is wearing hunter orange, someone who was known to have "dropped back to recover a downed bird," is not readily excusable in my view. More care and caution should have been exercised. This was "reckless" shooting. I'm glad the victim is not seriously injured.
Of course, none of us is perfect, we all make mistakes. I like to think I wouldn't make this mistake, but who is to say what I would do.
I don't think this has any political implications. What difference does it make to the body politic if the VP is a reckless recreational shooter? Isn't going to effect foreign policy or domestic policy. I don't think this will have any serious impact on second amendment or hunting issues. Hunting accidents happen.Hunting accidentsare regretable. Many hunting accidents, including this one, are avoidable by exercising due care. Hunting is still safer than many other sports. Many more people die from swimming accidents per year than die from hunting accidents. Many more people die from boating accidetns per year than die from hunting accidents.
At a personal level, it is probably worth thinking about your hunting buddies. How safe are they in the field? What is the level of their judgment? What about yourself? I evaluate myself and find that I have taken a shot that had some risk in it, so I am not guilt free. It is worth thinking about not from point of view of beating yourself up but from point of view of establishing practices that reduce risks of accidents.
