Vt. Judge Ups Controversial Sentence for Sex Offender
Thursday, January 26, 2006

BURLINGTON, Vt."”A controversial ruling for a sex offender in Vermont was changed Thursday from 60 days to 3 to 10 years after a judge received pressure to extend the punishment.
When Judge Edward Cashman sentenced Mark Hulett, 34, to 60 days in prison for sexually abusing a child, he said he wanted to make sure the man got treatment that would be available while he was behind bars.
Ever since, he's been vilified by television commentators, bloggers and even the governor who say he was too light on the crime.
On Thursday, the case was back in court, and state prosecutors persuaded Cashman to reconsider the sentence. Prosecutor Robert Simpson argued in court papers that a 60-day jail term wasn't nearly enough.
"This court's sentence must consider and include punishment for the defendant's action in repeatedly sexually assaulting this child," Simpson said.
Hulett had pleaded guilty to charges that he had sexual contact with a girl during a four-year period beginning when she was 6.
At his first sentencing, Cashman said the best way to ensure public safety was to get Hulett out of prison so he could receive sex offender treatment. Because the Corrections Department concluded that Hulett wasn't likely to reoffend, he wouldn't be eligible to receive sex-offender treatment until he reached the end of his jail term.
After Cashman announced the sentence, Gov. James Douglas called for the judge to resign and several lawmakers suggested he be impeached. On FOX News, Bill O'Reilly told viewers as video of Cashman rolled: "You may be looking at the worst judge in the USA."

Should of cut his penis off and left the 60 day sentence as it was. There is his treatment. He is cured in less than 15 minutes and saved people tax money for the years in prison now. But in a situation as of her age,She was 6 he was 30. I would say kill him. This country has it's morals all screwed up.Small time marijuana users gets life for the 3 strike law and child molesters and rapist get 5 to 10.Something about morals is wrong here.

Treatment that has never been proven to work. That's a good one. I feel a bullet behind the ear would have been a good sentence.

That is why we all of us need to write our congressmen, senators and push for Jessica's law. Only about five states have the law.. that a first time sexual offender of a child must serve 25 years min... second time offense, life in prison..
I am very strong about that. My three year old grand daughter was sexuallymolested by a 18 year old boy and got 3 years in prison, and 10 year probation... When someone asked me why I didn't kill him, I simply answered.. Thank God for Jesus,, or you all would be looking for his body.
In Canada, one of the most liberal counties in the world, it's 25 first time, and castration the second time.

A few major problems with this judge, the way I see it anyway.

1.) The guy has his oath to judge the law backward - doing time comes first, then treatment

2.) He's a little off his rocker - he sentenced a murderer to something like 3 consecutvie life time terms, more than any other sentence of that type

3.) He's setting an example, a bad one

4.) Three years is STILL not enough time for this piece of filth - the sentence still screams to every pervert in the land that it's ok to rape little girls - his sentence isn't even equal to the time he spent raping this little girl

5.) Why is this judge so freaking concerned about treatment for this worthless POS, why not the girl???????

I wonder how he would like to be in a cell with Bubba for four years and let Bubba play the Butt Bongo Boggie on him. You think he might have a different feeling... (Ouch)..

He is an idiot...

Update as of today.. The sixty days was thrown out, and the offender received 3 years... I still think it was 22 years too little.

everyone always picks on florida BUT here we don't put up with this. due to the victim being under 12 years of age, makes it a capital felony....which means he's a great candidate for the death penalty. besides, in prison...child molesters are normally killed off way before their release/death date. even the animals in prison hate child molesters!

The Corrections Department had concluded that Hulett was unlikely to commit another such offense, and Vermont does not provide sex-offender treatment to such inmates until they reach the end of their jail time.

Cashman said he would have imposed more jail time "” a three-year minimum "” if the state promised treatment while Hulett was jailed.
This leads me to believe something was brewing here before this case ever surfaced.

Hulett tested at a borderline intelligence level, has the emotional maturity of a 12- to 14-year-old and did not understand why others were so upset by his actions.

I don't think sentencing these types of individuals will ever serve to send a message to others. That would require some semblance of rational thought, and I don't think most child molesters are capable of rational thought. That's why rates of rescidivism are higher for these types than any other criminal.

Part of me thinks we should remove them from society permanently with a little potassium chloride.
