Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default MLK Day. Is it really worth celebrating?

I think its good to have a holiday for Martin Luther King. But to have all schools and many businesses off, I don't know....

I guess I don't quite understand the trend. We don't have to pledge of allegence in school, because we may not believe in it. It isn't right to say Christmas because it involves Christ. So why can't the ones who elect not to participate in MLK day, at least go to school.

Just so everyone knows, I'm not attempting to be racist, so please don't associate me as being so.

couldn't you say that about all holidays? Just let who wants to participate go to school.

And if that were the case should the teachers go just to see who shows up? Wouldn't that mean that the teacher never gets a holiday because they have to be there for the kids who decide to go

No!

Seriously, there were many great leaders of this nation that have done many great things but none are celebrated or given National Holiday status.

Today is also the day in which we observe Robert E. Lee's birthday but his birthday is hardly even talked about.

Heck we even lump Lincoln's and Washingtons birthdays together on one day. If there's a person that deserves his own holiday it's the very first president of this country. Not some civil rights activist!!!!!!!! [:'(]

It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president."

I guess we can allow the liberals 1 token holiday even if the rest of us don't want to observe it. At least we don't have a JFK, a FDR, a Cesar Chavez, a Malcom X, and a Princess Diana Day where the mail doesn't get the delivered.

Considering that the only two other men to have their own holiday are Jesus Christ and Christopher Columbus, I don't think MLK day is justified.

That said, if blacks want to have a national holiday where they can celebrate the collective civil rights movement, I'm all for it. That race was treated extremely bad for a lot of years, until the efforts of Dr. King and others put an end to it. Dr. King's life, his death and his holiday mean little to me. But I imagine if I had been treated as the black race was treated, they would mean a lot to me. So I'll not begrudge them their day.

So I don't celebrate MLK day but, yes, I think it is absolutely worth celebrating for blacks. And it's hard to have a national holiday that only one faction of our society celebrates without closing schools, etc. for everyone.

I also don't see how MLK day is a token liberal holiday. It has nothing to do with liberals, IMO.

There have been many people in this country who have done many great things, so I think naming a holiday after one individual is not necessarily appropriate, as it would be a disaster to have a holiday namedfor everyone who truly deserved one. I don't have a problem with having holidays that coincide with religous events that coincide with a significant portion of the workforce, but other than that and maybe the Fourth of July I don't seemuch point toholidays. I would rather have an extra day vacation than the government declaring one for me.

That said, Dr. King is definitely a prominent and important individual whose lasting effects have impacted a significant portion of the population, and he is as deserving of a holiday named after him as anyone. As Ben said, this is definitely not a token holiday for the liberals, unless standing up andasking the government to recognize your rights is "liberal".

As for people deserving a holiday, I think FDR deserves one as much as anyone. If we are going to name holidays after people, I would support an FDR day.
