Default The whole issue of neutering and spaying is very important.

Lanse on this we are in concert.

If you buy or acquire any pet at any time you own the responsibility as well as the pet.

It is wrong to not neuter them if you have no intentions of purposely breeding them. It is wrong to cut them loose in most circumstances and that wrongdoing is compounded by cutting them loose after failing to have them neutered.

My opinion is that even farmers have the same responsibility. Neutering is part of the cost of ownership just like food and medical care for the creature. If you want ten cats on a farm, as an example, but you can only afford to neuter five, then own five. It is no more complex than that.

As I say, I would favor laws requiring neutering and restraint of dogs and cats...in a perfect world.

badshot, I salute you. Great thread and a great twist. I particularly like the heirarchy displayed of family over animal, which is why I also respct burnie's position.

And yes I edited this...my hands are a bit arthritic when I type these days.

All my pets are fixed. Its my job to make sure my pets do not make unwanted pets that others have to deal with. I also do not take on a pet unless I plan on keeping it until it passes on. The whole issue behind the pet (aka cat) problem we keep tossing around here would be fixed if people were responsible when it comes to being pet owners. But we know that will never happen. Heck, a large part of our species will not even act responsible when it comes to raising their own kids.

Thanks, VC.

I stand behind my reasoning for wanting to get rid of a pet. I however cannot understand why people would obtain a pet and not get them fixed if not intent to breed was in the bigger picture.

Both cats I own(ed) were fixed at the appropriate age - it was my responsibility, just as it's now my responsibility to not let the cat off at the corner only to become a feral cat for other people to deal with.

Surprisingly, everything here makes perfect sense. I would love to see some sort of requirements for sterilizing animals for those who want to keep a bunch of cats around on the farm. Or, even some sort of limitation on the number of cats that can be on a farm/household. But, I wouldn't hold my breathe. Beyond spaying and neutering, don't forget thatpets don't have an inherent right to roam on other people's property, especially those working to sustain a good population of small game animals. A special effort should also be made to keep petsin your yard, ata bare minimum. And, as someone discussed elsewhere,if your pet will go beyond your yard, a collar with bells on it to warn small game that your animal may try to stalk is a good idea. All of those things together would greatly lessen the chance of folks like me having to deal with the messes that I occasionally have to deal with.

Recently, the owls have sent our barn cat population on the decline.
