It should read:
"In America, you are "presumed" innocent until proven guilty.
Just because guilt is'nt proven, does'nt mean you are'nt.
That's the simple minded answer anyway.

That's exactly what I was getting at! So many teenagers that I have interacted with seem to have this mentality that there is nothing wrong with their (bad) behavior if they don't get caught.
I mean, I know kids have always done wrong things with the hopes of not getting caught. But it seemed that in the past, they still knew it was wrong. Now, the mentality is that it is not wrong if your not caught.
Can anyone else attest to this, or is it just my own perception?
I don't think the mentality itself has change from one geration to the next so much as their perception of right and wrong . Many things that folks don't bat an eye at now would have been considered scandalous just 30 or 40 years ago . I can clearly remember producers of programs airing on NBC around 1976 complaining that the network censors would only let them use 1 "hell" and 2 "damns" per program while the other networks were far more liberal with salty language . Compare that to what's on today and the difference is very clear .
Another thing to consider is that the so called nuclear family is pretty much a thing of the past these days , so the kids look elsewhere for guidance , and what do they have guiding them ? Foul mouthed , self absorbed , materialistic celebrities on MTV and in the movies and the world of pro sports . Their role models all but preach that it's ok to screw somebody else for your own gain , but don't get caught ! It's all about the bling , the flash , no depth or true understanding of the concepts of right and wrong .

Many kids today are like that, probably many kids from previous generations were like that as well.
The one that kills me is getting caught doing something you agreed not to do, then complaining that you get punished. For example, high school jocks agree to a code of ethics around here that includes no drinking or drugs. Locally some jocks went to a party, drank, had pcitures taken that then went on the internet, somehow they were brought to the attention of the school, who then booted the jocks in the pictures. The response, including from some parents? That's an invasion of privacy you can't punish the kid for what you shouldn't know about!
In the real world we live in today. You are guilty until proven innocent.
More to the point you are convicted by the mediauntil a jury finds you not guilty, but then you are found liable in civil court.

The media tries to make everyone's mind up for them. Apparently, in journalism schools around the country, they have been teaching that for years.
As for the criminal/civil differences, you have to be guilty beyond a reasonable doubt to be criminally liable. Only the preponderance of the evidence is required for civil liability.
