This is a picture that is on a christmas cardthat one of our leaders in the pro gun fight is sending out this year. I thought it was little different then to normal holiday card

Armed Santa card

Santa Claus points a handgun at a masked terrorist on a Christmas card that gun law expert John Michael Snyder sends this year to a number of recipients.

Among the addressees are the President and Members of Congress.

The 8.5" x 5.5" card presents Santa guarding a group of small children from a bomb-harnessed suicide killer. It appears that the bomber is about to throw a stick of dynamite at an image of the Infant Jesus placed beneath a decorated Christmas tree.

A message on reverse wishes recipients the peace and joy of Christmas and a New Year of triumph over terrorism.

Snyder believes the original drawing conveys a definitive holiday season message.

"Terrorists are out to destroy personal freedom and undermine traditional values associated with Santa Claus and the Christmas Crèche," he says.

"Law-abiding American citizens by the scores of millions realize they need guns to protect their lives and the lives of their loved ones from terrorists and violent criminals of various sorts," he continues.

Snyder observes that the number of privately owned firearms in the United States is higher than at any previous time and continues to increase. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives estimates there were about 215 million guns in private hands in 1999, when the number of new guns each year was averaging about 4.5 million, or about two percent annually. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, there were 60.4 million approved new and used National Instant Criminal Background Check (NICS) firearm transactions between 1994 and 2004. The number of NICS checks for firearm purchases or permits increased 3.2 percent between 2003 and 2004.

With a current population of about 294 million, and with the Gallup Poll revealing that 30 percent of Americans report they own at least one gun, Snyder notes, it appears that there are well over 80-85 million firearm owners in the United States.

"Americans own more guns that there are votes for President every four years," he observes. "More people own guns than vote every four years for the winning presidential candidate."

Named "dean of gun lobbyists" by The Washington Post and The New York Times, Snyder, a former NRA editor, is Public Affairs Director of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. He also is Vice President for Public Affairs of both the National Association of Chiefs of Police and the American Federation of Police and Concerned Citizens. He is Treasurer of the Second Amendment Foundation.

Snyder is the author of the book, GUN SAINT, a biography of St. Gabriel Possenti, a mid-nineteenth Italian seminarian who used handguns to rescue a number of villagers from a gang of terrorists. He is Chairman of the St. Gabriel Possenti Society, Inc., which promotes Possenti"s official Vatican designation as Patron of Handgunners.

I'm as pro-gun as Snyder, but I think it crosses the lines of good taste. A Santa with a gun in his hand will turn off many of those folks in the middle.

If you polled mom's about this card, what do you think the reaction would be?

Great play for sucking up with the boys, but something Snyder didn't need to do.

I agree with Underdog - not only is this the kind of thing that turns the middle away, it reminds me that so many people just don't understand that the middle is the place we need to play to - you don't change people's minds on either end of the spectrum (usually).

Going with your post on this, why would Santa need a good lawyer if the guy was bi-polar and off his meds? It doesn't really matter if the guy has a medical issue or not when he's planting dynamite to blow you up and kill you and people around you.

Santa just needs to remember to shoot to kill. The process is a lot easier if there is only one story and its your word vs. relatives of the victim.

Plus, Santa has in all those years of community service and he's nice to elves.
