He has not been charged with outing a covert agent. He is being charged for lying to investigators. Plame is not a covert agent by definition of the statutes involved and it was a grave political mistake by Bush to allow this investigation to continue. I think he thought that it would exonerate the claims against his admn, but that didn't happen.

He didn't lie about something he didn't do. He leaked her. And it may be a crime. It looks like it's not, as she was not a covert agent at the time of the outing, and that's seems to be why an indictment in that area is slow coming and may not come at all.

So, probablu not a crime, but still politically scandalous. Still malicious. He lied trying to cover his butt.

Kind of like Clinton. He lied about something to cover his butt, not to cover up a crime.

It doesn't make any sense. Libby was an idiot. Instead of just being honest and letting the chips fall (i.e. being accountable), he decided to shade things and got caught. Not very smart and now he's created an unfavorable legacy that is never really going to completely go away, even if he is acquitted.

That is one possibility. However, often times, stupid people lie just to lie or any one of a half dozen other stupid reasons. Hopefully Fitzgerald sorts this one out so we all know.

Again, why was the CIA agent's name leaked by Libby? What was the purpose and intent of revealing her identity?

Good questions. I hope Fitzgerald is able to get these answered also. As far as I'm concerned, the Bush administration and VP Cheney specifically are far better off without Libby if he's dumb enough to do something this stupid.
