The ALCU said boy and girl inmates at the youth correctional facility are routinely subjected to "inhumane conditions" and abusive discipline. They also are not given proper access to education or programs, the ACLU said.
Maybe I'm a little dense , but isn't prison supposed to suck ?

I think the key word here is "youth". They still need to have classes even though they're imprisoned at such a young age. As far as programs and inhumane conditions... give me a break. You're right Tazman. It's "prison". It's not supposed to be fun.
oooooo abusive discipline. From the number of kids in juvenile facilities today, it doesn't seem that the discipline is abusive enough. If kids knew that the repercussion for their actions would be more than a slap on the wrist, maybe there wouldn't be such a high juvenile prison population.
Most inmates go to prison knowing that they will have nothing to do all day, except watch cable TV. This is nothing more than a change of scenery since most have had nothing to add to society. Mabye if hard labor was reinstituted, people might think differently about losing their freedom and working a 60-70 hour week for no pay. This might actually rehabilitate those who still go to prison, show them what it is like to work for a living. Unless these young kids are taught a quick lesson, they will most likely be in and out of jail for the rest of their lives.

I'm with the ACLU on this one! Those kids should be allowed to grow surfer mullets, be given courses on surfing, have access to hair stylists, and for the Love of God, be allowed to surf a bit here and there, afterall it's Hawaii, no?

It's sometimes difficult to tell when you're joking , Bob .
To my mind the quantum shift in prison philosophy came when bleeding hearts decided that rehabilitation of convicted felons was possible . If a criminal had any respect for the law they wouldn't become criminals , so that idea was a loser from the start . Before rehabilitation I'm sure the punishment model had it's share of recidivism , but I'd bet a beer that it was a hell of a lot lower than rehabilitation's dismal track record . Personally , I'd love to see brutally hard labor and flogging make a comeback in the penal community . No , I'm not joking .

- every crime has a sentence, not a range, but a sentence.
- for each "return trip" to prison, you multiple your sentence by the number of times in, so on your second trip to prison, the sentence doubles, then triples....
- no parole, when you're in you're in.
- plea bargain cannot result in no time in jail
I support much shorter sentences with much more severe and harsh treatment. It would save money and be more likely to convince someone that they do not want to reoffend.I am calling for cruel and unusual punishment.
Prison would be the last place anyone would ever want to go.
