KENOSHA, Wis. (AP) -- A 10-year-old New Muenster boy died Saturday after being hit by a truck while raising money for his Boy Scout troop.
Kenosha Sheriff's deputies are looking for the vehicle, and the boy's name had not been released Sunday evening. Kenosha Sheriff Sgt. Timothy McCarthy said the boy was out selling frozen pizzas for his Boy Scout troop Saturday afternoon when he was hit.
A passing motorist saw the boy lying in the road and a damaged bicycle and called the sheriff's department.
"He had been hit by a car and left to die in the street," McCarthy said. "At this time our reconstruction shows he was walking south on the shoulder when he was struck. The impact propelled him over 100 feet." The boy was taken to Memorial Hospital of Burlington. He was transferred to Children's Hospital of Wisconsin in Wauwatosa, where he died of massive head wounds and internal injuries later that evening.
WDJT-TV in Milwaukee identified the boy as Ryan Ronfeldt, although the sheriff's department would not confirm that.
Candy Ronfeldt, the boy's mother, told the television station her son was "a big kid with a giant heart. He would never hurt anybody." "I don't know what kind of a person would just leave a child like you would a dead animal," she said. "I've cried so much that I just don't think I can cry any more and then I'm proved wrong."
The sheriff's department said investigators found parts of a burgundy Ford full-size pickup truck or Bronco built between 1980 and 1986. "A 12-inch square portion of the grill will be broken out, as well as the passenger side headlight and turn signal," McCarthy said. McCarthy said the truck is close to the same maroon color that the Sheriff's Department squad cars used to be, and asked for residents to look for the vehicle and call authorities. "There is no way the operator and-or occupants of this vehicle didn't know they hit this kid," he said. "We want everybody looking for this guy."
Late Sunday night, the department had received some calls from the public about the case, which would be forwarded to detectives on Monday, Lt. Peter Gallo told The Associated Press.
The driver and all passengers should be jailed for life. WI needs the death penalty back for exactly this reason.

I agree, I would definitely save the taxpayers the price of a trial.

I agree he needs to fry, but it was not premeditated so life would be the worst this dirt bag will get.
Forgive me, but I don't thinkpremeditation should have anything to do with it.
If you hit somebody with your car, that's an accident, but if you drive away and leave them there to die, then @#$%^& needs to burn. This is exactly what the fella involved in the shooting I posted a while back did (shot the kid, and then left 'em there to die).
As to the punishment, WI doesn't have the DP, so when they catch the sorry fool(s), they'll get free room & board, and I'll get another tax increase.
Got to love the irony...

KENOSHA, Wis. (AP) -- A man surrendered to authorities investigating a hit-and-run accident that killed a 10-year-old boy who was out raising money for the Boy Scouts, the sheriff said Monday.
The 30-year-old man told detectives where he hid his vehicle, Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth said. He was being held on a tentative charge of felony hit and run, Beth said.
Quote:
John Trione, scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 381, said he saw Ryan when the boy came to his home looking for more product-order forms about an hour before the accident.
Ryan, a member of the Webelos, a Scout group for younger boys, had sold $1,300 worth of items, and his family will receive two pocket knives he earned for that effort, Trione said.
The scoutmaster said the boy's father, Kevin Ronfeldt, wants the proceeds of the sales to fund a scholarship for children who cannot afford to go to Scout camp.
Ryan died Saturday evening at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin in Wauwatosa.
"I thought that he held on until I told him not to be afraid," said his mother, Candy Ronfeldt. "I told him to let go, and it was literally seconds later that he died."
Trione said he teaches the boys in his troops to take responsibility for their actions.
"The irony of this situation is, here is a boy who always took responsibility for his actions and he was hit and killed by somebody who did not take responsibility," the scoutmaster said. "I'm pretty angry about it. There have been a lot of emotions today. Scouting is about building young men, and the community lost a boy who had huge potential to do great things in the future.
The victim's mother found it hard to understand how the driver could leave the scene of the accident.
"To me, you don't hit a child and just drive off," she said. "That's what you do if you hit a raccoon or something, not a human."
My bet, the SOB was drunk, and didn't want that added to his charges.
