Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

N.C. teens arrested after call to police for help

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

MORIARTY, N.M.

Two North Carolina teenagers who called police for help after running out of gas ended up in jail after a routine check found they were wanted in an attempted murder.

Richard Austin Bishop, 19, and Danielle Smart, 17, were sought in the attempted murder of Bishop's mother - and Bishop was considered armed and dangerous, Moriarty Police Chief Bobby Garcia said.

The officer who arrived to provide the two with assistance from the department's traveler's aid fund Monday instead took both of them into custody.

The officer found a loaded .22-caliber, long-barrel revolver under the passenger seat, Garcia said.

The pair agreed Wednesday to be extradited.

Sgt. Marty Thomas, an investigator with the Shelby Police Department in North Carolina, said Bishop is accused of entering his mother's bedroom early Oct. 13, and shooting at her four times at close range with a .22-caliber handgun when she sat up.

One bullet hit the woman, Rhonda Greer, in the forehead but didn't penetrate her skull; another struck her hand, Thomas said. He said he didn't know why the shot didn't penetrate.

"Maybe the ammunition was bad," he said. "I'd like to think it was by the grace of God."

First, does the stupidity of people ever stop amazing you? Second, at close range, I find it interesting that even a .22 bullet would penetrate a skull. Am I crazy?

Check out this story in today's Daily Oklahoman.

Jersey number inspires criminal to seek more time
By Ty McMahan
The Oklahoman

A man"s wish that the number of years he spends in prison match the 33 on a former NBA star"s jersey was granted this week by an Oklahoma County judge.

Eric James Torpy "He said if he was going to go down, he was going to go down in Larry Bird"s jersey," District Judge Ray Elliott said Wednesday. "We accommodated his request and he was just as happy as he could be."

Eric James Torpy asked to do three more years on a 30-year sentence for two counts of shooting with intent to kill and robbery. The total now reflects famed Boston Celtic Larry Bird"s uniform number.

Torpy, 27, appeared Tuesday for formal sentencing in front of Elliott.

The Oklahoma City man was offered a plea bargain on the charges, which he refused at first, Elliott said. Torpy would only agree to the state"s deal if he could pay homage to his favorite basketball player with the punishment.

"I"ve never seen anything like this in 26 years in the courthouse," Elliott said. "But, I know the DA is happy about it."

STATISTICS post, page 2-"I don't try to explain what AP prints". I'm not about to go through 20 years of local newspaper articles to prove to you the economy around here is failing, at best. You didn't even post a reply to that. But like I stated in that post we have lost almost all of our industry only for these people to go find jobs making less money, or worse yet to retire early with little or no pension. Oh the numbers look good but that don't tell the full story. ...Deleted by CalHunter...
