North Toledo is still reeling from the Nazi march which was supposed to take place Saturday morning.
Toledo Police Chief Michael Navarre has called for a state of emergency in the city, and anevening curfew remains in effect; peopleshouldnot be walking the streets after 8:00PM.
The trouble began about 11:30 Saturday morning when groups "“ both Nazi and protester "“ amassed in the North End near Wilson Park. Despite a very heavy Toledo Police presence "“ on foot, on bicycle, on horse-back, and in vehicles "“ the gathering turned violent when the first rock was thrown. At that time, Navarre, concerned for the safety of police and residents, called off the march.
Groups continued to clash; factions going through neighborhoods, throwing rocks, causing damage, looting and setting at least one fire at the corner of Central and Mulberry.
At a 4:00PM news conference, Mayor Jack Ford, Chf. Navarre, and other city leaders put the onus of the day specifically on black gangs. At this time, there is no information regarding the number of injuries to civilians, fire or police.
Despite being very prepared, Fox Toledo News crews were caught in the melee; both of our vehicles sustaining damage. Other news outlets in Toledo had the same experience.
News conferences with the mayor's office and police department are scheduled for Sunday. Saturday night into Sunday morning was reportedly quiet, according to the TPD.
At the request of the City of Toledo, Ohio Governor Bob Taft okayed the Ohio State Patrol to support and assist the TPD. Troopers helping are from the OHP's Special Response Team.
The St. Vincent's Mercy Medical Center 150th Anniversary celebration on the hospital grounds for Sunday has been postponed
Once LEO was attacked, they have the right to defend themselves. Maybe put a few of these buzzards in the ground, and the message would get around, don't mess around in our town.

Both sides. The Nazi's were their protesting because the gangs in the area are so bad. The gangs decided they didn't want the nazi's on their turf.
Like it or not the Nazi's have as much right to march as Farakan did in Washington over the same weekend. Both are hate groups but people didn't attack the militants in Washington.

As charlie already said, it takes two to tango and in this case when you mix racist and gangs, particuarly black gangs together you are going to have trouble from both sides.
The sad thing is that the non-racist whites and the good blacks of that city both have a black eye due to the actions of the ignorant dirt bags who caused all the trouble.

According to my sources, which announced about 6 days prior that this event would occur, the Nazis came to town because of something that was posted on an internet website. In other words, something apparently caught their attention and they decided to show up in Toledo and march. It was revealed to me that their move was meant to be antagonistic and it certainly was.
You cannot seriously believe they were somehow supposedly doing a public service by "protesting because the area gangs are so bad."
While I have no use for gangs, I don't recall hearing of riots in Toledo prior to the arrival of the nazi lowlifes.
VC1111 I am not sure where you are headed, but I assume that you are not defending the rioters.
What I saw on the news showed a number of folks that just seemed to be caught up in the moment.
They didn't appear to have a "higher" motivation (the protesting of nazi scum and principals)
Thanks
Mr-Pirk

You're right, Mr. Pirk, I am not defending the rioters...per se. I am saying that if you go into someone's neighborhood and insult them, antagonize them, throw bottles at them, etc, you can expect to be treated in kind. This was an invasion by a hostile group, nothing more, nothing less.
In this case, I can, at least to some degree, understand the use of violence as an answer. It is not the right answer, and it seldom is, but it is an answer and one that can be at least somewhat understood.
If we're going to look at the root cause of this particular problem, the true reason why people rose up and became violent, then we have to lay the blame on the invaders whose intent was to cause violence.
