Will or can the Democrats listen to what their own people have identified as their biggest problems?http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/10/06/AR2005100601645_pf.htmlSome how I doubt it, but if they ever want to be back in power they better, of course I am rather worried as to who the Repubicans will run for president next time.

RE: Report Warns Democrats Not to Tilt Too Far Left
i got a survey from the Democratic Party a few days ago in the mail, asking me to fill it out and return it so they could get an idea from their base on the direction the party should take.
in theory, a good idea.
in reality, the survey sucked.
some of the questions were fine, but just as many were what i would call "LOADED".
for example, it asked if it was more important to provide for the elderly or preserve tax cuts that only benefit the richest people in the country....well, i think the truth falls somewhere between those ideas, but the choices are yes, no, or undecided.
another example was the question asking whether i thought that we owed it to our children to provide them with the best education possible...um, DUH. i don't think that's an idea that is held by only one political party. i don't recall seeing a republican on the news telling reporters that kids are getting too good of an education, and we really ought to cinsider dumbing them down a little.
the questions were way too broad, and didn't touch upon the issue that really needs to be discussed - methodology. it's not whether or not i think these problems need to be solved, but HOW i think they should be solved. THAT is the information they should be looking at and asking for.
needless to say, i was frustrated by the survey, and still have not decided whether or not i am going to return it to them.

What's worse, being too far to the left or too far to the right? Most Americans live somewhere in the middle and would prefer a balance. Personally living in a welfare state scares me only a little less than living in a church state.

I'll second that. I'd prefer our government not get so carried away with abortion, gay marriage, intelligent design, and all this other crap. I'm at the point now where I just really don't give a rats a$$. I woiuld just likeagovernment that sticks to its more basic functions and operates more efficiently. Apparently, that's too much to ask.

David M, maybe you should consider responding with a note attached to the blank survey spelling out these concerns and any others you have. If enough respondents did that, possibly the party would start to listen. I agree on your points completely.

David M:
Yes, I hate these kind of surveys. Not only is the question loaded, often it is irrational. Hmmm, the best possible education? The best POSSIBLE education would very clearly be unaffordable and probably unwise. Speaking just for myself, I might prefer to have my kids taught English by this year's winner of the Nobel prize in literature, taught physics by the winner of the Nobel prize in Physics, taught chemistry by the winner of the Nobel prize in chemistry, taught history by Professor Kagan of Harvard, etc. What would the price tag of this be and would allocating the Noble laureates to the task of teaching my children be the best utilization of their capabilities?
The NRA does this in some of their surveys too. "Do you support elected representatives evacuating themselves on the second amendment that our heroic forefathers fought and died for on foreign soils far away from auntie Em and applie pie and the girl next door?" Duh?!!!
I'm a faithful dues paying member of the NRA and I appreciate their legislative efforts, but their mailings are sometimes a little parochial.
RE: Report Warns Democrats Not to Tilt Too Far Left
Alsatian: You are right about that. If they don't phrase them like that then they find that too high a percentage of the members think contrary to what they want them to think.
Remember back in the early 90s when the antis would refer to NRA surveys that showed that even the members wanted certain types of control?
