I heard a spokesman for ONE on Fox this morning commenting on Bonno and Bob Geldoff being up for winning the Nobel Peace Prize this year for their efforst with the One organization in helping fight poverty. He made an interesting comment that got me thinking, he said, "Bonno and Bob share the same conviction as I do and that's to bring justice to the billion people living in poverty". Justice? Hmmm.
Here is One's declaration:
Quote:
"WE BELIEVE that in the best American tradition of helping others help themselves, now is the time to join with other countries in a historic pact for compassion and justice to help the poorest people of the world overcome AIDS and extreme poverty. WE RECOGNIZE that a pact including such measures as fair trade, debt relief, fighting corruption and directing additional resources for basic needs " education, health, clean water, food, and care for orphans " would transform the futures and hopes of an entire generation in the poorest countries, at a cost equal to just one percent more of the US budget. WE COMMIT ourselves - one person, one voice, one vote at a time - to make a better, safer world for all."
With the New Orleans deal and the talk of poverty in this country, I find this interesting. What do you think? We are blessed as a nation - why? Is there really a way to stop poverty across the globe and in our back yards? Is poverty really "someone's" fault?

Yes it is called work. Many that can..... don't. Welfare should be for the unfortunate people who can't work due to illness or injury. The rest need to get off their butts and do something for themselves and stop expecting others to bail them out.

There is a solution to abject poverty and it works reasonbly well. It's called Communism. But I doubt that the top 80% of our population is willing to lower their standard of living so the bottom 20% can move up. We're already paying most all their taxes for them that in return provide all that government hands out.
In this country if a person gets a highschool education and doesn't have children out of wedlock, their chances of living in abject poverty are pretty slim.

RE: Poverty... Is there a solution?
Poverty has always been and will always be. Two reasons, 1st bad luck. Poverty due to a temporary situation. What social services are ment to help overcome. 2nd, lack ofrespect.Ones who will not do for themselves. The first ispossible to overcome, the second is impossible to overcome.

I agree. I think that there ALWAYS will be poverty. I think we can make it relative (in terms of how bad the poverty is) but there will always be part of every society that is living in poverty. It may be a matter of economics. We've spent almost 7.5 trillion dollars over the past 40 years on fixing poverty and haven't made a dent.

The only realistic cure for poverty is to remove all alternatives such as welfare except for extreme hardship cases , you won't get off your ass and work as long as somebody else is stupid enough to pay for your rent and groceries . It should be very hard to qualify for public assistance , and such assistance should be finite and temporary . No more housing projects , no more unlimited Medicaid , no more unlimited food stamps . These programs should be serving the needy elderly and the infirm , not creating generation after generation of welfare families .
Remember , welfare didn't exist during the Great Depression , yet somehow everyone seemed to get by . Welfare is an enormous drain on public resources that could be better spent other ways .
