Default Illinois Invaded by So Called Hunters!

This all started last year while my family and I were hunting a Bow Only area owned by the state in Il. My cousins property borders the state land which is 15 miles fromeach direction form verysmall towns.

One day while hunting a few hundread yards from cousins house on the state land his Bird Dog and Sheep dog came running by my cousin and I, they never seen nor smelled us. However they did spot another Out of Stater up the ridge and tree'd him. The entire time this was happening I could here is wife yelling for the dogs as she new they were in the wrong area. A few minutes went by and I harvested a doe, but before climbing down I herd a yelp and then only one dog went back to the house.

The dog never returned and was found two days later with his collar removed and stuffed under a cedar cutover not far from our stand location, So I KNOW the hunter also herd the owner calling the animals. This is a mandatory sign in location and all the ones signed inthat day were from out of state, not counting us.

Part 2: Opener 2005.
My cousin and I decided to hunt other side of the state property which also joins some private land. As I am climbing in my tree I hear a voice in the dark say You are tresspasing on my land. I had scouted this area for 3 years and I was close to the line but very legal. After a lengthy conversation in the dark I regained my composure and stayed put. 30 minutes after light the land owner came back with video camera waiting to catch me tresspasing. After he seen my location and discovered I was a local he explained his reason for such measures and apologozed.

Hunters from out of state also Killed one of his dogs last year and he decided to cause some havoc.

I know it must bee frustrating for those that drive 5-7 hours from Alabama and AR and other areas to have a hunt disturped by dogs. But around here dogs are like family and there is no excuse for Murdering a Dog period.

This is as polite as I can put it. If this is what you hunt you are not a Hunter at all and you should not be allowed to hunt in IL ever!

Well I dont know about the other guys dogs, but as far as your cousin's go, you say they ran past you and tree'd and out of stater. I agree that you should not shoot anothers dog, especially if you see a collar. But if these dogs were barking at him and tree'd him. I know i would feel very threatened and perhaps he did as well. Depending on his exact situation, I may have done the same thing had I been treed and was hanging on above some possible vicious dogs.

Buck442 you said, "... One day while hunting a few hundred yards from cousins house on the state land his Bird Dog and Sheep dog came running by my cousin and I..." So you admit they were loose and running free and trespassing on the taxpayers land? Your cousin lets his dogs run free and doesn't bother to keep them tied in the yard or behind a fence/pen? He lets them run free without concern for whose land they might trespass on and what they might do, like run deer or even tree other lawful hunters???

Sounds like someone else took care of at least half the problem with your cousins dogs! Collars be damned, what do they have to do with anything? Your hunting license doesn't give you the right to trespass and harass so why should a dogs collar give them such excuses?

Sorry if I seem harsh, my childrens pets are like family to. But there are certain responsibilities that come with owning them and keeping them up is one of them. I can assure you that if ANY dog "treed me" I wouldn't hesitate to terminate them right there on the spot, whether I heard the owner or not!

I with you on this one Red. If you guys knew the dogs, why didn't you get them off the hunter (who was hunting legally)? If someone killed my Rott, it would break my heart. But that's why I keep him on a leash when outside.

My two cents:
1) The OOS was hunting legally on public ground .
2)Your cousin's dogs were not properly restrainedand threatened the OOS's safety .
3)The OOS acted well within his legal rights .
The law would have been on the hunter's side regardless once they found out that the OOS had been treed , the dog lost right there .

I have to agree totaly with RedAllison,
Here in Oklahoma it's against the law to let your dogs run the woods
during hunting season! I've known game rangers to shoot running dogs
and go to the owners house to bring them a dead dog and a fine!!!
No free range animals here except wild life,
I for one HAVE been one of those tree'd hunters and have 4 dogs under my belt,2 of which the owners told me to shoot if I seen them running deer. You see around hereare alot of farms and small calves that can die of exaustion(calves that can cost$300-500)or even killed by dogs, and alot of farmers will shoot on sight if he see's a dog running in his fields.Just because someone is from out of state, don't give dogs the right to chase and possibly attack someone!
UNLESS THEY ARE PROTECTING THEIR PROPERTY![:@]

Really its no different than if a bear or a mountain lion would tree you while hunting, only these were dogs. If something is threatening my life,I shoot. If they tree'd the guy, I'm sure they were barking and he didnt hear them being called.

I've never shot a dog. Yet. I have been tempted to many times but I have dogs and really don't want to kill one. But I keep my dogs penned up/restrained. If they get out and get hurt or somebody kills one it sure would make me unhappy but I wouldn't hold it against anybody. Thats just what can be expected. I've never understood how some people can let their dogs run loose, especially during hunting season. Its too bad but I find it hard to blame anyone for shooting a dog that's not where it should be.
