Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default Can't recognize the 2nd Amendment in action

This weekend I talked to my brother in Atlanta about the welfare of some family friends, formerly of New Orleans. Their house had some water damage, but street wasn't looted like others nearby. One of them said " I never thought I'd be glad to see rednecks with shotguns standing in their yards." (no shots were fired)

Isaid something like "It's a good example of the 2nd Amendment in action."To which he responded"What?I don't think so. Those rednecksweredangerous doing that, but at least they kept the looters away."

I wonder if my brother hadhis brain turned on.....

Many people only recognize the 2nd amendnment when it fits their own particular level of safety and comfort. This is dangerous in that it gradually waters down the effect and protection of the 2nd amendment.

Funny how when people see you with a gun, your the bad guy. Just another fine example of the liberal media at work. They've made the AK the international symbol of terrorism, even though bombs are much more frequent. I notice even on articlesinvolving suicide bombings, several papers that don't have pictures use AK printshop graphics.

Be honest. When you see an AK, what's the first thought that runs through your mind?

To me, it brings back memories of all the days I spent using an AK to deer hunt as a kid, before I switched to a 30-30 and .308.

Somebody that can't afford an AR-15.

Yes, people have little understanding of the second amendment. I live in Texas just north of Dallas, and the OU/Texas game has always been called the "red river shootout" in the past. This year the name has been changed to the "red river rivalry." How pathetic and banal.

Last year I had an argument with my sister when I told her I could not vote for Kerry if for no other reason than he was an enemy of my second amendment rights. We quickly converged on the "assault weapon" ban topic, and her statement was a snarling "who needs assault weapons, just give me one reason why anyone needs an assault weapon!!!" I told her people who were in the position of needing to defend their stores and property during the Oakland earthquake about 10 to 15 years ago probalby would have been happy to have assault weapons to defend their property. The idea that one might actually need to defend oneself is just not in their minds. I don't know why this prospect seems to dim and foreign to them. Hurricane Katrina, which started this thread, is obviously another case in point. There will be other events which require people to defend themselves and their property. I think my sister -- and others -- just think the second amendment reads "the right of the people to keep and bear hunting arms shall not be infringed" but that isn't how the law reads.

As another thought, I have read on the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) web site that they think guns can be regulated and don't see this as adverse to maintaining the second amendment. I wonder what is their view of the confiscation of arms undertaken in New Orleans during the recent chaos?

I get your point, though I have to say that when I see one, I always think of Kalishnakov (sp?) on the history channel saying "You can throw a handful of sand into my rifle, and it will fire!"
