Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

i don't have all the info on that law...does it really allow a florida resident to shoot someone publicly, if they feel threatened?

I've never seen any single lobby that can distort things like the gun control lobby. Buncha freakin' wierdos!

Making gun control a hot topic in '08 would be the best thing that could happen for the Republicans. It might be the single issue that prevents Hillaryous from returning to the White House.

I think this is damaging to the gun control people. Certainly I think it will leave a negative impression with Florideans with an interest in the tourist trade who otherwise are not solidly pro-gun.

I agree that the law is kind of a common sense self-defense law. It certainly does not authorize me to shoot someone without cause. As I understand it, formerly I would be required to retreat and try to flee the threat and only then be permitted to fire. The change allows me to stand my ground -- for example not abandon my car which is being car-jacked -- and shoot if I am threatened. Just common sense.

More anti-gun stupidity.

I think the fact that Brady has launched a vindictive smear campaign against FL's number one industry, tourism, will back up on them. This bill enjoyed broad bipartisan support in the FL legislature. Floridians are not going to like the fact that Brady is doing this and I think it will hurt efforts to get Dems elected to national offices.

I heard a discussion of this on Fox yesterday, and their legal expert, Judge Neopolitano, was on the right side, but armed with the wrong facts as he frequently is. He cited that the law only applies the the domocile. He is wrong, it only applies to CCL holders, but applies to any public place.

Florida has been a trendsetter in firearms laws since the passed CCL in 1987. So far aboslutely no evidence that arming honest citizens has done anything to create dangerous situations for anyone other than criminals.

Do you feel threatened differently in public than you do in private? The law does nothing more, or less, than to re-affirm the right of a citizen to protect themselves, their family or another against attack without the requirement of attempting to remove themselves from the scene before taking action. In most states, if you have the ability to flee the scene of a confrontation and don't take that opportunity, then your self defense or defense of others defense becomes void. In Florida, you now don't have to crawl under your bed and have the perp come after you before you can defend yourself.
