WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Congressional Democrats blasted former Education Secretary William Bennett on Thursday for saying that aborting "every black baby in this country" would reduce the crime rate, and demanded their Republican counterparts do the same.[/b]
"This is precisely the kind of insensitive, hurtful and ignorant rhetoric that Americans have grown tired of," said Rep. Bobby Rush, D-Illinois.
Bennett, who held prominent posts in the administrations of former presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush, told a caller to his syndicated radio talk show Wednesday: "If you wanted to reduce crime, you could -- if that were your sole purpose -- you could abort every black baby in this country and your crime rate would go down.
"That would be an impossibly ridiculous and morally reprehensible thing to do, but your crime rate would go down," he said

I guess I must be as stupid as Bennett, because I thought exactly the same thing when this 'pre-emptive execution' matter was brought up the other day. But I had the feeling there wasn't the intellectual maturity here to intelligently and rationally discuss an emotional topic.

Why has every single person here taken Bennett's statement out of context and used it to malign him? He followed the comment with "That would be an impossibly ridiculous and morally reprehensible thing to do, but your crime rate would go down,"

Both his initial and final comments were right on the money.

Stuck on stupid is right. If the shoe fits wear it.

Some things that might be factual just don't need spoken.This statement can be backed up by facts but what good comes from speaking publicly about it.
Black leadership in this country is moraly lacking.But when a white man says something this degrading how do we ever expect the racial divide to come to a close.
I have no idea what this guy was thinking !

Well, he IS statistically right, and everybody in this country that puts any faith at all in crime statistics knows this. But why make a statement like that? What purpose did he serve with that statement? With that statement, he's engaging in the same sort of racial drivel that folks like our buddy Farrakhan engage in when they talk about white people conspiring to destroy black people. Classic example of needing to put one's brain into gear before putting one's mouth into gear. He must attend the same school of public relations as Pat Robertson.

That said, I fail to see how the Republican leadership in Congress has a responsibility to admonish a TALK SHOW HOST for his comments. I don't see the Democrats admonishing Michael Moore for his nonsense.
