Default Why I don't take the Media Seriously

How can anybody take a journalist, photographer or publication seriously when they engage in such crude and unnecessary reporting?[:@]

Photographer leaks Bush potty plea
MARK TOOR

September 16, 2005

President George W. Bush apparently had his mind on something more earthy than diplomacy during his visit Wednesday to the United Nations.

A picture shot with a zoom lens by Reuters photographer Rick Wilking shows Bush printing a note saying: "I think I may need a bathroom break? Is this possible. W."

"Rick had no idea what he was shooting, or what Bush was writing," Reuters picture editor Gary Hershorn told Editor & Publisher magazine. Hershorn said he did not know what the note said until he enlarged the picture during editing.

Bush may simply have been asking Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice the proper protocol for being excused, Hershorn told the Photo District News Web site.

"There was no malicious intent" in distributing the photo, he said.

But it was fodder for many less than complimentary references in foreign newspapers and political and satirical blogs.

"Excuse me Condi, can I go to the bathroom?" read a headline on the Times of London web site.

"How about that punctuation? Is he unsure whether or not he has to go potty?" read a comment on liberalpenpal.com.

The Canadian Web site Chortler made up an addition to the note: "Make that an extended bathroom break, say about three years or so, until my second term as president is over."

Bush did indeed take a bathroom break, Reuters reported.

"It happens to the best of us," Margo McDonald, a member of Scotland's parliament, told the newspaper The Scotsman. Copyright 2005 Newsday Inc.

I agree, CalHunter. Kinda unnecessary reporting, isn't it? Course with the endless reporting on Katrina, I think we're all thinking the same thing: Can't they find SOMETHING else to report on???

But, seriously, I do agree that that is a ridiculous story. It's amazing how some journalists engage themselves in such juvenile reporting, or how some editors actually allow those stories to go to press.

Really, it's almost as unbelievable as some law enforcement officers that engage in race-based physical force against suspects or accept bribes. I guess that's why I don't take law enforcement seriously.

I wonder what would have been on the note if it were Slick Willy?
Now that the Katrina thing is old news the regular networks are back to their usual boring stuff. Fox and CNN are really digging to find the fodder for something to get the viewers again. If I have to see Geralo Rivera1 more time I think I'll scream.

Geraldo. . . now there is a boil on the butt of decent journalism. Fox News should've fired him long ago. He has absolutely nojournalistic ethics and he has proven time and again that you cannot believe anything that he is reporting; if he has half the chance, he'll dupe you. I'll never take Fox News seriously until they get rid of him and those idiots on "Fox & Friends" in the morning.

I know what you are saying Ben. I really noticed it during the invasion of iraq. Fox would always come out of the gate withspeculation and reporting as fact every major incident. I would then switch to CNN and they wouldn't report until they got the story straight. Sometimes Fox was right on but many times they were shooting in the breeze.
Here is classic Geraldo at his best. He should stick to opening safes from sunken ocean liners.

From http://www.michigangasprices.com/Forum_MSG.aspx?master=1&category=1176&topi c=145288&page_no=1
Geraldo Rivera arrives in a Fox News truck. An elderly woman with blond hair grips his elbow. She's wearing thick dark glasses and a pink shirt. He carries her small white dog in his arms. He's wearing thigh-high waders unzipped to below his knees. We shake hands. "Her relative called one of our stations," Geraldo tells me, explaining how that call went to another station, and then another, and finally to him.

The woman had been stranded in her home for six days. Geraldo picked up the woman and her dog and brought them here. The woman looks frail on his arm, though not as bad perhaps as a lady collapsed on a chair nearby, unable to move. Or a woman in a wheelchair being lifted from the truck, carrying her prosthetic leg on her lap.

"That's the second time he brought her here," one of the doctors tells me, nodding toward Geraldo.

"What?"

"They did two takes. Geraldo made that poor woman walk from the Fox News van to the heliport twice. Both times carrying her dog."

"Are you serious?" I ask. He says he is.

Thanks Champlain for the rest of the story. I have never liked nor respected Geraldo. And after he compromised that military unit with his sand drawing, I have absolutely no use for him.[:@]
