Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Ifferd I am well aware that we do have an effect on the planet, I have to confess I misread the article when I posted this, it turns out that the report indicated that if global warming continues it may slow or stop the ozone hole from repairing itself. It does torque my jaw though when the UN and the like accuse the US of being responsible for all of it when in reality China, Russia and many third world countries know entering into industrialation age pollute the enviroment far worse then we do.

Global warming is a big crock of poo. It's nothing but lies and propaganda. Show me proof on global warming and I'll show you a smart Democrat.

The eruption of one St Helen does more to effect global warming that all the damage done by man in his life time on earth.
There is a natural cylce of life for this planet as there is for any other one. If you believe that dinoaurs roamed the earth and that a glaciers covered what is now Canada and northern US you have to wonder why and where they went. What caused the Ice Age?
Was it the cycle of global warming that occurs brought on by the eruption of many volcanos causing just the effect that Ifferd states or was it casued by a meteor strikeing the earth creating a cloud from impact and fires? The cloud of ash from either will do just what Iffred describes.

We as a nation being as productive as we are do just as much as europe and other nations to slow the process. Since we aremore active, more productive we do pollute more than 3rd world nations but in different ways. I guess it is just a matter of how you want to see the issue of life and death on the planet.
I want one of these dooms day freaks to give me a time table on when global warming will causethe death of the planet. Then I want them totell me that we will not have developed alternative energy resources to forestall the horrific even within that time frame.
Think how far we have come in the last 100 years. Think how far we will advance using our resources in the next 30 years.

Or was it cause by the very large SUV that those dinoaurs drove because of their size? (Thats my bet, those dam SUV)

Ifferd:

The concepts of "global warming" and the theory that greenhouse gases are causing global warming are separate. Earlier episodes of "global warming" have been observed in our planet's history -- for example the period 1000 to 1200 AD are known to have been abnormally warm -- that were not caused by emissions of greenhouse gases. Therefore, it may be that we are experiencing "global warming" but it is not demonstrated that emissions of greenhouse gases are causing the global warming. This is not a mere logical argument, a distraction for effete salon crawlers. It would be tragic if we took draconian measures to limit greenhouse gases -- dial back to 1990 emissions levels as was proposed by the Kyoto Protocol (I think, don't roast me if I'm not entirely correct on the emissions levels permitted) -- but this was not the true cause of global warming. I say "tragic" because the economic costs of this measure would indisputably "dial back" our standards of living and limit our economic opportunities. And I don't mean just the ability of the rich to buy yahts and hummers, but the ability of ordinary people to help send their kids to college or for all of us to afford health care.

Another angle of the global warming story. In a global warming scenario -- regardless of the cause of the global warming -- there are NOT just losers. The media focuses on the negative effects. Wouldn't benefits also occur? Might there not be new lands that abundantly produce crops that currently are unproductive? I like to drink wine. Wouldn't new vineyards be established further north and new excellent wine be produced in new regions?
