I was talking to some Marines this weekend in Louisiana, well, they all had a story like this: We went to help out a city officials million dollar home. We moved trees, helped get mud out and get it liveable. The owner insisted that we mop the floors and our CO told him no, that we were going to go help more people. The man went inside to call someone "higher" than our CO and get us to go mop. We said, "Sir, with all due respect, we're not maids, and you're not high and mighty. You got arms, mop the friggin floor yourself."
Yeah, what kinda crap is that? Talk about a corrupt place...
Oh it gets better. There was a lady standing outside of Walgreens in Little Rock, on the trip down there. She said she needed Pampers for her baby and that she was from California. Me in my niceness (and ignorance, but I've never been gypped before) gave her five dollars, which she grabbed, ran around the corner and bought drugs with. Then the thugs in their bling blingin car drove by and eyeballed me.I wantedto ask em what the heck they wanted. Cause I wouldapulled outmysidearm and saved the taxpayers some money. Thanks to them, no one is ever getting money from me again.
I get to Louisiana to help at a distribution center and help pick up debris, and lo and behold, somebody decides that they'd like to have my digital camera. So...they up and take it.
On the ride back home I get a call from Visa. Come to find out, our thug neighbors decided to get into Lindsey's car over the weekend and take her wallet. Yeah, we helped6 people fill up vehicles with gas this weekend. They also got her SS card, her DL, her school ID, and $100 WalMart gift card, and $100 worth of food cards that were wedding presents to us.
Lastly, our church in Arkansas is housing New Orleans victims at our church campground. Well, there's been rapes, people are demanding alcohol and cigarettes and being unruly. Where's the thanks for letting them sleep in beds, have meals, have air conditioner? There is none. They're a bunch of freakin animals.
Our freakin world is turning into a bunch of uncivilized barbaric idiots.
Over the past few weeks I've had numerous accounts that have happened to drastically decrease my faith in humanity.
People shooting at rescuers, people stealing from helpers in Louisiana, corrupt government officials who think they're God, people stealing from college students who can barely make it, people ungrateful for a roof over their head and food...
The list goes on...and it's only gonna get worse. Get ready for it.

Don't do it, son't let them get to you. You showed compassion. Even if some of those who have been helped out, are not appreciative of it, the stories will come out.
But think in terms of this, it may be the NEXT person that really needs your help and you denied it because of some lowlifes. Don't let them take that away from you, it is worth more to the rest of us, than the material things you lost.
BTW, those in the church doing crap like that will get their's in the end.

Yeah, and I got a ration of crap for the way I felt about the situation down there in Louisiana.
You couldn't pay me enough to go help out N.O.

FroMan, you have been a member here for a long time and from what I have seen in your posts, you are a good person with a solid background and a loving, caringfamily. You have now experienced first hand how a very few people in our society can behave when a situation gets a bit tough for them. They represent a very small percentage of the people in our society but when exposed to them you become disillusioned very quickly. Do not allow this experience to get to you, I'm sure that most of the people you helped during your days in Louisiana wiil be forever grateful to you and all of the others that were there. Human nature being what it is, a few will always take advantage of every situation, from the politician trying to take advantage of the Marines to those ripping people off by outright theft or lying. They do not represent the majority in our country but merely the worst. Most people will do the right thing, like yourself, and our communities and our Nation are the better for them.
Froman as others have said do not throw in the towel my friend, we have some evacuees here in Fredericksburg, the day they arrived when interviewed by our local paper the adults told the reporter that they were not sure if or when they could/would go back to NO, but that the most important thing they needed were JOBS!! These were good folks who had lost everything they owned except their dignity and thier families. They were not asking for money or food, they were asking for JOBS!!
Long story short they interviewed the same people a couple of days later, they thanked the entire community, they had received numerous job offers and all 3 of the adults were starting their new jobs that Monday.
