For the past 5 years I've been wondering.. What ever happened to "Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what can you do for your country!". Especially with all the Bush bashing and saying what he hasn't done, or what people think he did wrong.

I'm afraid thatmany have slipped so far under the spell of the nanny state, that for most of them it is a lost cause. Nearly half of the people in this nation have come to believe that they are helpless without the aid of government, so much so, that they won't even attempt to help themselves when things get tough. There are, obviously, times and events that require help from an outside source but to be so totally dependent upon anybody, particularly the government when you need things to happen quickly, is foolish and dangerous.
From what I've seen, many of the people in our armed services are doing just that and more--asking what they can do for our country and then doing it. Our country still has a majority of good-hearted people who believe in helping others and service to our country. Unfortunately, the majority of our media does NOT believe in these values and virtues and in any case, is caught up in portraying all things negative (including anti-war whiners) to sell TV, radio and newspapers. Thus, we don't hear about the good people in our country, just the whiners and other assorted ambulance chasing scumbags.[:@]

It's good to hear some people still believe in what JFK said. Unfortunetly I live in a Philly suburb working as a social worker for the mentally ill. I hear I need more, more, more and none are willing to work a bit for it. And no I'm not just talking about my clients, most of my co-workers as well. It's sickening.

Yes but what are YOU doing about it? I am being deployed down there in a few weeks or so, and will be there for a few weeks to a few months supporting FEMA. I will work 16 hour days for 8-hour pay, but that's okay, I enjoy this kind of work. It makes me like I am part of the solution, not the problem. You can talk the talk, now let's see everyone walk the walk.
Rifle....I just heard the Red Cross is dying for Social Workers all over thecountry due to this. So now is your chance.
AlaskaMagnum. They are planning on flying a bunch of people into the Philly area. We were already preped that we'll be utilized.
This post wasn't about the hurricane victim. Just bad timing. This post was about people prior to hurricane or unaffected people in general with a entitled attitude about everything. If I were to volunteer and go down there I wouldn't get paid, first and foremost I have to worry about my wife and infant child. So I did what I could, give to the Red Cross.

Rile1564,we have been paying a great deal in taxes and been having our rights taken away. They have outlawed smoking in bars which cost the state alot of tax dollars so now theyhave to make it up somewhere else.Right now our area is hitting the poor bars that are holding texas hold em tournaments as a way to get some business. The bar is allowed to have state run lottery machines in it but a little $10 buy in poker game is illegal. The state just wants it's cut which seems to be getting bigger all the time. What are these politicians doing to earn their high retirements and no cost medical care? Not nearly enough in my opinion.
Mdrbowler99..good point but not quite what I'm talking about. I'm refering to the peole that don't pay into the system (taxes) or haven't in some time that complain that they don't get enough. I sit with client in the Welfare office and watch people with $300 purses complain they don't get enough $$$ for their 4 kids. Or people that get their food, apartments, SSI checks (welfare) and health insurance (better then what most of us working folk have),ALL FOR FREE,moan and complain that they don't get enough. When asked why don't they get a job they say "I can't.. I'm disabled" when the only "disabling" thing about them is their attitude.
Or even tax paying people that shout "I pay taxes so I pay your salary" to a police officer that pulls them over. So they pay taxes like everyone else and they expect to get away with unlawful conduct.Nonsense. These are the type of people I'm talking about. And even people that expect workers to be fired immediately because they didn't like what the worker said or did, even if it's in the realm of the workers job. Like an article I read last week of a lady sueing a Dr, he told her to loose weight because she was obese. That was his job but she's sueing him because he "offended" her. How dare the Dr. tell her the obvious and try to help her health. Yet if he never told her, her family would sue because the woman died of heart failure due to her obeseity.
