Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default Bush to visit good or bad?

I just heard that "W" was planning a site visit to New Orleans and Mississippi tomorrow. What do you guys and gals think about that one. I have been involved with presidential visits in the past and it takes a huge amount of time, people and resources. I kind of wish he would stay home. I don't think it will be a safe environment for him and hate to see all the attention switch to him from the relief effort. Just my opinion, what"™s yours?

I think it's a good thing. That way when he talks about the destruction he knows exactly what he's talking about. I hate when people talk about things that they only saw news coverage of or pictures of. It's not the same thing at all. I doubt he'll even land the heliocopter. Probably just do a fly by so it shouldn't take up much resources. But I do know what you mean about that. While in college I had Bush Sr. and Clinton (both at 2 different times) arrive and it was horrific at the amount of time and energy it takes to prep a site for a visit.

Yup most people don't realize the behind the scene work necessary for even a short 1 hour visit. Before I retired I was a manager in a large Telecom company and know first hand all the work involved. It takes many people days and sometimes weeks to do all the prep work. I believe he is planning to land.

It's a terrible idea. Bush said we need to conserve fuel, and then he and his crew are going to fly that 747 somewhere and then fly him around in a helicoptor. I guess the "we must conserve" was the royal "we" - which isn't surprising considering the source. I'd like to see him lead by example. Furthermore, he'll hamper recovery efforts with the security measures that have to be put in place when he visits. The only reasons he's going is to bolster his miserable polling numbers, which are at an all time low.

Interesting points Champlain Islander. If Bush doesn't go, many people will bag on him for not going when he went to the 9/11 site. If he does go, people will cry foul for the gas he takes to fly there, the disruption of the relief effort, etc. It would seem like he's in a catch-22 type of situation. I think it makes more sense for him to go and draw more attention to the problem than to stay away because some people are going to cry foul no matter what he decides.

I was in N. Dakota in the spring of 97 when the James river flooded. President Clinton made a visit during the rescue effort just as President Bush will do now. While presidential visits are disruptive to those attempting to get things done, the affect on the residents/evacuees is well worth that disruption. It says to them we are not being abandoned, we are an important part of this country, and people do care. As superficial as that may seem, it is important.

Yes Cal it is a catch 22 but just like mayor of NO said today stop the press conferences and start doing something. The only ones that can hear the press don't really matter because it is the people of the Gulf States who really need help and they have no communications. He said the Gov't is just spinning the truth and that nobody has stepped up to the plate. Really, think about it.Everyone knew Saturday it was going to hit and now it is Friday and there are only a few thousand troops there. The Senate is just meeting to put an emergency vote out on 10.5 B to be used as stage 1 recovery. The Gov of Louisiana asked for 40,000 troops to stop anarchy andand they promised her 4500 starting today. There are thousands that will die in the next few days because there hasn"™t been any food or water and some are stranded within site of the dome. It appears that the only people who are getting anything are the 30,000 people who made their way initially to the dome. They are slowly moving them to a safer place where there is food, water, electricity and safety. Too late for "W" to save his polls. Between Iraq and this catastrophe he is toast.
