Weekly Sportsman and Gun Owners News Watch Sept. 28

Perhaps the simplest, yet most important action gun owners can take to ensure they will be able to help in the defense of our Right to Keep and Bear Arms is to make sure they are registered to vote. Only currently registered voters are eligible to cast their votes in the November 5 elections. Are you willing to let someone else decide who will speak for you in Congress or your state capital? Simply put, your vote is your voice, so USE IT OR LOSE IT! For voter registration information and applications for yourself or to share with your fellow Second Amendment supporters, contact the ILA Grassroots Division at (800) 392-8683 or click here. Gun shows, ranges, gun club meetings, and gun shops are great places to register pro-freedom voters. Remember, don’t stop once you are registered to vote yourself. Work within the pro-Second Amendment community in your area and help us register additional voters. Voter registration deadlines vary from state to state, but generally one must be registered to vote 30 days prior to Election Day, so act now!

Stop Legislation That Would Seriously Damage Hunting- (09/24)

A bill is being considered in the Senate Judiciary Committee that would undermine hunting and wildlife conservation. A new amendment to S.1655 by Senator Joe Biden (D-DE) claims to be “a rational and common sense approach” to the issue of exotic animals and enclosures.
The amendment sets arbitrary restrictions and other constraints on game preserves. It defines fair chase in a way that threatens all hunting. The language is vague and unenforceable. The amendment to S.1655 would also jeopardize state wildlife agencies by undermining their authority to regulate game within their states.
The amendment would remove what traditionally has been an issue regulated on a state-by-state basis and would bring management of game preserves under the control of the federal government.
The bill is scheduled to come to a vote before the Senate Judiciary Committee in early October.
Call both of your U.S. Senators today! You can contact them by calling 202-224-3121 and asking to be connected to their offices or by going to the Legislative Action Center at www.ussportsmen.org. Ask each of your senators to vote against S.1655 because it undermines wildlife conservation across the country. Also, if you are a resident of any of the states below, contact your member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and ask him or her to vote against S.1655 because it is vague and would adversely affect sportsmen.

Not Gun related but something to think about……….

The Saudis Are Our Allies, Right?

The Saudis were our allies during Desert Storm, but only out of necessity. Remember that they feared Hussein was coming after them after Kuwait, so self-preservation played a big role in their actions during Desert Storm. No such threat is evident this time around. (I could really go off on a rant here about Saudi Arabia harboring terrorists and supporting terrorism, but I won't.)

Over the past few months, you have probably noticed the on-again, off-again nature of Saudi support for action in Iraq. Ultimately, they will support such action, if only by not directly opposing it. In truth, the Saudi's couldn't care less what happens to Saddam. The war doesn't bother them. Its what comes AFTER the war that they are truly afraid of. That is, the establishment of a viable democratic government in Iraq.

A post-war democratic Iraq with UN sanctions lifted and renewed aide from the US could flourish and shift the balance of power in the Middle East away from the Saudis, thus giving the US a very strong hand in dealing with OPEC and the region in the future. This is to say nothing of the effect a free and prosperous Iraq would have on an oppressed Saudi populace, most of which still live in the 12th century by modern standards.

Couple this with the potential of increased oil production from non-OPEC countries such as Norway and Russia, and you get the kind of thing that keeps the Saud family awake at night worrying about.

Gun club under fire

By: Darrell F. Kuhn September 19, 2002

A Rhinebeck resident handed the Rhinebeck Town Board a petition requesting that a local rod and gun club stop shooting firearms at night and change the location of their shooting range.

Rhinebeck residents attended a Rhinebeck Town Board meeting last week to express their concerns about the Northern Dutchess Rod and Gun Club at 140 Enterprise Road in the Town of Rhinebeck. They said that people shoot firearms at the club well into the night past 9 p.m., and that the shooting is loud, intense, and could be dangerous. Approximately 50 people signed the petition.

Spero Chumas, who owns property across the road from the gun club, spearheaded the petition the week before, and gave it to the Town Board at the meeting. Chumas said that people who signed the petition are all individual homeowners. He said that the location of the shooting range, adjacent to the road represents a serious safety hazard.

Chumas said that he himself is a "sportsman" and a "shooter." He added that he feels that he and other residents on Enterprise Road have lost the safe and peaceful use of the road, especially in the evening.

"Several years ago I had a round (of gunfire) go over my head," Chumas said. "I was on my property when the round went over my head, which means it had to have gone over the road. I think there should be laws here to protect us and allow us to enjoy our property. We want them (the gun club) to stop shooting at night. We want them to have decent shooting hours, so people can enjoy peace and quiet on their property. We also want them to relocate the range so it's not so close to the road."

Sid Griffin, the President of Northern Dutchess Rod and Gun Club, said that no shooting takes place at the range past 9 p.m., and that the range is completely safe. He added that the State Police have told them they are conforming to the law. Additionally, he said that the gun club has been in existence since 1932, and it is a shooting club along with archery, fishing, and trap ranges.

"I swear on a bible that we have not shot past 9 p.m.," said Griffin. "We have been in keeping with the village's noise ordinance, which is 9 p.m., and we are in the town. I feel we're good citizens and good neighbors, and as far as I know, we've made attempts to make the range safer.

Town Supervisor Dennis McGuire said that the information presented to the Town Board has been given to the Town Attorney, who will review it. McGuire said that he does not know when the Town Board will revisit the issue.

"It's been turned over to the Town Attorney, and he'll look over the matter," McGuire said.

"We'll just wait and see what the town finds," said Griffin. "They're going to look into it."
