Why don't the Russians have equipment to save their own subs?
Here we go again, trying to help Russia with equipment that has to be moved thousands of miles with little time before air runs out. And every time, their story of how the sub was sunk changes. Those guys are right now probably laboring to breath, and have little chance of being rescued. Why don't they have their own sub-saving equipment? "I hope that Russia loves their children too."
RE: Why don't the Russians have equipment to save their own subs?
Actually , the rescue unit that you referenced was built as part of a cooperative effort between us and several other nations ,including the former Soviet Union ,since it's primary mission would be one of mercy . It did take awhile for the Russians to release the details of their hatch design so that the unit could accomodate it though , trust is sometimes a difficult bridge to build . If the choices are help them in their time of need or let those poor guys slowly suffocate I know what I would vote for .

I don't want them to die either and that's my point. We have the equipment to save one of our subs without needing another country to quickly pack and fly it thousands of miles, only to have hardly any time left to save the people on the sub. It's not like this is the first time and they didn't realize they might need such underwater equipment.
RE: Why don't the Russians have equipment to save their own subs?
It is. Apparently, it got tangled in an antenna used for a monitoring system to monitor US (and probably ***anese) submarines off the coast of Kamchatcta (sp?), a system similar to the SOSUS sysyems we have (or had) in the Atlantic to monitor old Soviet subs.

Too bad the Ruskis don't put as much into their sub saving equipment as they do making vodka
Oh, but they do make some awesome vodka. My aunt went to Russia to teach them how to run profitable private farming coops since because they don't have one clue since the communists used to tell them what to plant and what to harvest. She brought back a couple bottles of Mikhail Kalashnikov vodka (the same Kalashnikov of AK fame, no joke), and it was somegoodstuff!
I'm just glad they got them up alive and well. Russian subs have a bad reputation of going down and not coming back up.

RE: Rescue subs - I wondered why we didn't just give them one?? It would cost us peanuts compared to the amount of money this country wastes all over the world!!
Then I heard that they are buying two of them, from the BRITS!!
