Bush: Intelligent Design Should Be Taught, August 02, 2005 6:04 AM EDT
WASHINGTON - President Bush said Monday he believes schools should discuss "intelligent design" alongside evolution when teaching students about the creation of life.
During a round-table interview with reporters from five Texas newspapers, Bush declined to go into detail on his personal views of the origin of life. But he said students should learn about both theories, Knight Ridder Newspapers reported.
"I think that part of education is to expose people to different schools of thought," Bush said. "You're asking me whether or not people ought to be exposed to different ideas, the answer is yes."
The theory of intelligent design says life on earth is too complex to have developed through evolution, implying that a higher power must have had a hand in creation.
Christian conservatives - a substantial part of Bush's voting base - have been pushing for the teaching of intelligent design in public schools. Scientists have rejected the theory as an attempt to force religion into science education.
On other topics during the group interview, the president: -Refused to discuss the investigation into whether political aide Karl Rove or any other White House official leaked a CIA officer's identity, but he stood behind Rove. "Karl's got my complete confidence. He's a valuable member of my team," Bush said.
-Said he did not ask Supreme Court nominee John Roberts about his views on Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that legalized abortion.
-Said he hopes to work with Congress to pass an immigration reform bill this fall, including provisions for guest workers and enhanced security along the U.S.-Mexico border.
Bush spoke with reporters from the San Antonio Express-News, the Houston Chronicle, The Dallas Morning News, the Fort [/blockquote]

Since evolution has a far better chance of proving itself than IT ever will I think he put his foot very far into his mouth . Neither side has conclusively proven themselves right , but evolution comes closest . IT is a possibility only to those who have no use for empirical evidence .

I would just as soon schools teach none of the above on theories of creation. If an exception is made for one theory, it is only fair to make an exception for all. Leave the science to the classrooms and the religion to the parents.

RE: Bush Promotes Bible as Science Book
That's the problem evolution is science and it is ongoing. All the rest is religion. NT you make an excellent point however on keeping church and state separate. I understand the Christian take on all of this and I bet there are as many other religious based theorys as there are religions in the world.

This is nothing but cover for that turd in the punchbowl mentioned at the end of the article "immigration reform". He needs some 1 on 1 time with Karl, who can tell him he doesn't have to pander up to the religious right any longer.
Teach it all. Simply present ALL the scientific evidence - whether it fits anyone's preconceived ideas or flies in the face of it -- then present the only two theories that have any standing -- creation and evolution. Let the students decide for themselves which one is a better fit.

If you taught every storyÂ* about how we got here, there wouldn't have time to teach anything else.
Exactly.Â* Leave it out of high schools and save it for college.Â* Then whoever can study whatever theory they want.
I agree .
Since neither side can prove their case , and how we got here ranks in importance to our daily lives like the chicken or the egg question , the best place for a discussion of the two would be a college philosophy class .
