Default Finding Osama

The other day I was at work and went to the officers barber shop to get my hair cut (We have inmates that cut our hair if we wish to have that service). The offender that cuts my hair is black, comes from houston and actually comes from a pretty good family, not your typical convict. He's fairly well educated actually. Anyway he's cutting my hair and the TV is on with the recent news about the london bombings and al quieda. As he is cutting my hair he tells me that the wrong people are looking for Osama bin Laden, forget the army or marine corps, he told me how to do it. This is paraphrasing but it's what he said and I laughed so hard I couldnt breath:

"they need a black woman to go to the judge and say that Osama bin Laden owes her child support, the state of Texas would FIND his ass".

I had tears in my eyes i was laughing so hard. just thought i'd share

Ryan, let me understand this a little better. You are in corrections and you allow your hair to be cut by an inmate? What do they use plastic scissors? Sounds a little dangerous to me. Early in my career I was a telco repairman and was assigned to one of our state prisons to do some repair. I had to turn over truck keys and go through all this elaborate security stuff and then they sent a person with me to unlock doors and give access to the different areas in the prison. While I was talking to him I asked how long he had been a prison guard and he said guard...heck no I am an inmate. There I was with a tool belt filled with sharp screwdrivers in a long hall alone with someone who had become a trusted inmate. I freaked and slowely made my way to the door and said I needed some more equipment from the truck. After they buzzed me through all the different areas and back to the free air I told them I needed a real guard not an inmate. Hats off to you because it must be a tough job.

Oh by the way good joke!

I might be reading into this too much, but its unfortunate that you regard ALL inmates as someone that is liable to stab you in the eye with a screwdriver at any moment. I would be interested in knowing if he actually posed any real danger to you whatsoever.

No you aren't reading too much into it. I did have a problem with the whole situation partly because everyone was in this medium security facility because they did something pretty bad and because I was surprised to be locked up alone with an inmate when I thought I was with a guard. It was my first and hopefully last time to be in a correctional institution and I didn't like the feeling it gave me. Several years before this happened two high school dropout teenage kids ambushed two 12 year old girls walking home from school in a wooded area behind the town park. One of the girls was killed and the other survived. Both were attacked with a knife and left for dead. The PBX (telephone) room was in an area at the end of the Max security wing and just before I found out I was with an inmate we walked past one of the killers sitting in a day room playing cards. It really freaked me out. I am all for rehabilitation and believe corrections officials have a difficult job but it isn't for me. Sorry if my broad brush comments offended anybody but I was just calling it the way I see it.
Did he pose a danger to me? probably not but this happened 30 years ago and I was young and panicked.
