Default Tourists Warned About Mexico

Our government is discouraging Americans to stay out of Mexico as vehemence by the border carries on. My only question is, who the hell wants to go to Mexico anyway? Even the Mexicans are moving away . . .

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The United States renewed a travel warning on Tuesday for U.S. citizens crossing the border into Mexico, noting more than 100 murders had occurred in the border region since June.

The U.S. ambassador in Mexico, Tony Garza, said that with violence showing no sign of abating, the travel warning issued twice by Washington since the start of the year had been extended and would be reviewed as necessary.

"The Mexican government is beginning to address concerns about the unacceptable level of violence along our border. Nevertheless, more than 100 violent deaths have occurred along the border since June," Garza said.

"Eighteen Nuevo Laredo policemen were killed this year, including eight in July. These disturbing reports make clear that Mexico needs to do much more to bring safety and security to our common border."

Mexico, which has reacted angrily to previous travel alerts and accused Washington of interfering in its business, retorted with a short statement saying it was continuing its efforts to fight organized crime.

"As it has reiterated on various occasions, the government maintains a constant fight against organized crime and is undertaking a series of actions to quell violence on the border," the foreign ministry said in a short statement.

Violence in northern Mexico has soared this year, leaving at least 600 dead, after President Vicente Fox launched a "mother of all battles" on drug gangs fighting turf battles there.

Fox sent hundreds of anti-drug troops to the area in June after a spate of police shootings in border cities, where cartels from the western state of Sinaloa are battling local Gulf cartel rivals for control of the cross-border cocaine, marijuana and amphetamine trade.

One of the worst trouble spots is Nuevo Laredo, south of Laredo, Texas, where dozens of people have been murdered this year and some 30 U.S. citizens have been kidnapped since last August.

I would be interested in knowing who the "600" dead and the "100" violent deaths were. If this is an attempt to keep drugs out of the United States, then it sounds like progress to me.

If...I'm reading it right, then it should be applauded rather than condemned.

I won't go there until they all move here. When I want to feel like I'm visiting our friendly neighbor to the South I visit Los Angeles.

WHY would anyone want or need to go there when they are all coming HERE?? Sometimes I feel I am already there! In the small town I was raised in there were4 major restaurants,......one Chinese, one seafood, one pizza/Italian, and one"American". NOW only the Chinese still exists - the other 3 are now ALL Mexican restaurants.

It has always been a good idea to avoid the border towns in Mexico, little there except cheap booze and cheaper prostitutes anyway. The interior of Mexico on the other hand is a different world, or was a few years ago when I worked there. (Yes I had a Green Card). The people were friendly and hard working. The food was great and hunting and fishing are excellent in places. Some of the most fascinating and beautiful country you will ever experience in central and norther Mexico if you like mountains and desert/plains. Mexico city is a cess pool, much like New York City, Washington D.C. or Chicago and Los Angeles, the language is even very similar to those places, mostly spanish with a smattering of english, so stay away from there.

Mexico is a fun place, I went last summer to Cancun.
Then again Cancun is not a typical city in Mexico.

I don't know much either, but it is useless anyways. I had to take three classes, which were mandatory. [:@]
