Although different areas of the country pay different scales, I'd bet most jursidictions would consider this a lower pay scale. I checked one website on entry level police pay scales for Arizona and all but one started at over $40K a year. I think the BP needs to bump their pay scale up if they want to attract more people.

If I can retire early, I'll do it for free.

But the only stipulation is that I get to use my own firearms. ...

Zeiss is making some truly kick arse sighting systems these day.

So I guess not all areas pay their law enforcement officers what our area pays theirs.. . our local PD starts officers at $23k. Sheriff's deputies start at $17k. .. and that's if they've been to the academy. Otherwise they start at $14,500.

I'll admit that I'm not familiar with Tennessee law enforcement salary schedules Ben. My earlier comment was made with border states like CA, AZ, NM and Texas in mind. LE in general is having a tough time recruiting and hiring enough qualified applicants to fill their vacant positions. When i saw that BP article, I thought about their pay scale versus the pay scale in CA and thought what a joke. A cop in CA could make double or triple their money and not have to relocate or risk being transferred halfway across the country if you ticked off the wrong supervisor. I checked AZ and found they make about $6-7K a year more. For many people starting out in the business in less expensive states to live in, that extra money is a car or possibly even a house payment over and above what the BP starts them out at. In CA's case, it's not even close. My point is that it is certainly difficult to hire enough officers when you're not competitive with the local departments in pay.

I just read on Newsmax.com that the cost of catching and deporting a criminal illegal is now $1,700 /head.

WHERE IS THAT MONEY GOING ???

That's up 400% from 3 years ago and the number of illegals successfully crossing has INCREASED.

It costs pennies to fire a round their way and tell them to turn around.

You have to read carefully through the article tardfarmer. The budget for BP and INS has increased dramatically and the arrest rate has gone down a bit since illegals now cross in more remote areas. The report doesn't address some issues like maybe the BP is getting better in more popular areas and will need additional personnel to seal off the more remote areas. Like most "studies," this one is looking for a sensational headline and not truely examining the entire issue.

The way things are going I don't believe this problem can be solved with anything short of cutting off ALL aid of any kind (hospital, welfare etc.) and deporting them with extreme prejudice/brute force.
