President Bush tonight ripped the Democratic Party as a pack of do-nothing obstructionists bent on derailing his agenda of reform, telling Democratic leaders in Congress that on issue after issue, "they stand for nothing except obstruction, and this is not leadership."
Joseph Curl at WASHINGTON TIMES reporting in fresh editions: At an evening congressional gala at the Washington Convention Center -- which drew $23 million for House and Senate Republicans and amounted to the kick-off of the 2006 political campaign season -- the president drew standing ovations from GOP faithful as he hammered Democrats for offering no solutions to the nation's most pressing problems. "If leaders of the other party have innovative ideas, let's hear them. But if they have no ideas or policies except obstruction, they should step aside and let others lead," Mr. Bush said to thunderous applause from more than 5,000 supporters.
The president, who has spent the last several months seeking consensus on his Social Security reform package and reaching out to Democrats with non-confrontational rhetoric, said opposition party leaders are pursuing "the philosophy of the stop sign, the agenda of the road block, and our country and our children deserve better."
"Political parties that choose the path of obstruction will not gain the trust of the American people," he said at the event dubbed "The 2005 President's Dinner."
Mr. Bush said political parties can take one of two approaches: "One approach is to lead, to focus on the people's business, to take on the tough problems, and that is exactly what our party is doing."
"The other approach is to simply do nothing, to delay solutions, obstruct progress, refuse to take responsibility. Members of the other party have worked with us to achieve important reforms on some issues, yet, too often, their leadership prefers to block the ideas of others."

while we're discussing explanations, i'd like to hear the president explain how he plans to reduce the deficit when he throws money all over the middle east and cuts taxes here.

I guess you prefer it the way the democrats do it, throw money away all over the world and on welfare programs, increase taxes and the deficit at the same time and then declare a surplus after borrowing from the social security fund??
If you would bother to look at the most recently published reports from the GAO and IRS you will find that income from taxes is, you guessed it, up. Amazing how that works, let people keep more of their money and they invest it and make more money on which they pay taxes, simple isn't it?????

Talk about tackling tough problems Here's one that no one with any oil connections will touch. Fix the erosion problrem of the Louisisana delta. We lose 24sq mi of iteach year. Why? The old channels cut through the delta for oil & gas piplines. surethey gotta pump the product to us. Why not make them fill backin? Too expensive? There's a tough problem tat affects the environment, hunting, lives & buisness. 40% of US seafood depends on the delta forpart or all of it's lifecycle. When that's gone, what happens to the adundant waterfowl from the Mississippi flyway so many of our hunting brothers enjoy?
I don't appreciate the efforts of the adminstration to diminish the power of many environmental protections we enjoy, like the Clean Air & Clean Water Acts.
The quality of our water & air are greatly improved from 30 years ago, but don't let the enviro-nutorgainizations hear you saying that. That hits themright in the pocketbook. Because we've made progressdoesn't mean we've reached our goals or thatthe continiued protectionwe gain fromenviormental protectiveacts are anti-business asis hintedat by the current adminstration.
To say the the Republican party ismore fically responsible than the Democratic party is ridiculous. They both spend a lot, just in different areas. The Dems make us pay for it sooner; the Republicans make our grankids pay for it later.
