Immigration"s U.S. Rep. Tancredo"s top topic
By DAN McLEAN
NASHUA " U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo, a vocal critic of President Bush"s immigration policy, announced he would run for President in 2008 " if he could not find a more viable candidate to adopt his views on illegal immigration.
The Colorado Republican announced his potential candidacy yesterday after speaking for roughly 50 minutes to the Nashua Republican City Committee at Langdon Place, an assisted living facility in Nashua.
"I don"t consider myself a candidate today," Tancredo said when asked if he is considering a Presidential run, adding, "If no one will take this banner up (illegal immigration) " and I say this with great trepidation " yeah, I will.
"I don"t know what else to do," he added.
"I say, "Run,"" yelled Claire McHugh of Nashua from a couch in the back of the room.
Tancredo"s primary goal, however, is to "push (illegal immigration) to the forefront of the Presidential debate" and persuade another Presidential hopefuls with more stature and resources than he to "take this banner up, not just with words, but their heart."
Many who enter the country illegally are just looking for jobs, Tancredo said, but others are "coming to kill you, and you, and me, and my children, and my grandchildren."
Tancredo, who was first elected to Congress in 1998, praised the action of New Ipswich and Hudson police chiefs who have begun citing illegal aliens with criminal trespassing and called his supporters to force politicians to take a stand.
"Make these folks (Presidential candidates) know the importance of this issue," he said.
"I"ve got to get a President in there who will commit to this," he said, later noting Presidential adviser Karl Rover made clear Tancredo is not welcome at the White House.
Tancredo had said that the blood of another terrorist attack would be on the hands of the President and Congress because they have failed to tighten the nation"s borders.
"He"s just not with us," Tancredo said yesterday, with respect to President Bush on curbing illegal immigration.
Yesterday marked Tancredo"s second visit to New Hampshire this year. The congressman said he also plans to visit Iowa and the Carolinas.
Illegal immigration is not easy to address, he said, because "we are all addicted to cheap labor," and some adhere to a "Kumbaya-singing" philosophy where borders do not matter.
Denver is one of America"s "sanctuary cities" for illegal aliens and the state of Maine acts similarly, he said.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement "is a mad house" where "no one takes responsibility for anything," Tancredo said.
"Progress is being is made. The tide has shifted. I"m not the only one talking about this anymore," he said.
"We"ve got one obstacle: It"s called George Bush, God bless him," the congressman said criticizing "guest worker plans" and amnesty programs.
Amnesty for illegal aliens is "lousy public policy" because it leads to more illegal immigration, he said.
Tancredo, who has supported the "Minuteman Project" to enforce the Mexican border, said diseases can also cross the border with illegal aliens.
Paula Johnson, an alderman-at-large for Nashua and a state representative said, "I don"t feel safe in this country. Nor will I ever, until the borders are shut down."
"English is now becoming the second language of this country," she said.
