We all owe that generation a huge thank you for all we have today. It breaks my heart how the older I get the less importance is put on WWII.

I beg to differ. Of any of the wars (except revolutionary and civil), I think WWII is the most widely read.
Least is probably Spanish American or Korea.
And if you think about it, they probably purposely don't teach too much about the spanish american war because it was a HUGE blunder (purposefully done ????) on the US's part and later afforded us the mistaken opportunity of simply saying:
"hey, that country looked at me crosseyed, lets invade" .
S.A. war set the scene for subsequent "illegalities" as Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq... etc.
