Kind of an interesting double edged sword though...
I have always advocated that the firearms restrictions be severely loosened but the penalties for using a firearm in a crime made more stringent.
What has happened is only 1/2 of that equation. It has it's good and it's bad. Stiffening the penalties is clearly an "anti firearms" bias, BUT, it will function to lower the number of deaths via firearms (I believe), thus aiding in killing the anti's arguments about the shear number of firearms related deaths.
Ultimately in this situation though, I think the bad may slightly outweigh the good due to the intention of such legislation.
