I found this strange (gun AND unborn baby related)

Under Utah's system of indeterminate criminal sentences, first-degree murder brings a mandatory five years to life, but Hacking's minimum will be increased to six years because he used a firearm.

I was reading about the Hacking murder, and two things jumped out.

#1 - she told all her friends and family she was pregnant and he even admits he killed his wife and unborn baby - yet there is "insufficient proof" she was pregnant so they couldn't do the death penalty.

#2 - the above quote. What does it matter the type of weapon used ? A more brutal murder would be stabbing someone to death with a dull spoon ......... and yet you could get 6 years LESS for using that ?

Kind of an interesting double edged sword though...

I have always advocated that the firearms restrictions be severely loosened but the penalties for using a firearm in a crime made more stringent.

What has happened is only 1/2 of that equation. It has it's good and it's bad. Stiffening the penalties is clearly an "anti firearms" bias, BUT, it will function to lower the number of deaths via firearms (I believe), thus aiding in killing the anti's arguments about the shear number of firearms related deaths.

Ultimately in this situation though, I think the bad may slightly outweigh the good due to the intention of such legislation.

tardfarmer I know the gnu death rate in Africa is fairly high, but I am not sure if it is that way due to guns, spears or arrows![8D]
