WASHINGTON - Breaking a silence of 30 years, former FBI official W. Mark Felt stepped forward Tuesday as Deep Throat, the secret Washington Post source that helped bring down President Nixon during the Watergate scandal. Within hours, the paper ratified his claim.
His family members thought otherwise, and persuaded him to talk about his role in the Watergate scandal, saying he deserves to receive accolades before his death. His daughter, Joan, argued that he could "make enough money to pay some bills, like the debt I've run up for the children's education."
Quote:
Felt was convicted in 1980 for authorizing illegal break-ins during the 1970s at homes of people associated with the radical Weather Underground. He was pardoned by President Reagan in 1981.
I don't see this guy as a hero. Nixon was wrong and deserved to be caught and punished but Felt is definitely no hero wearing a white hat.

The man misused a trusted position for personal gain or revenge. I have seen that happen within Law Enforcement here at home. It is disgusting. He is a felon and now is not much more that a doddering old fool.

Misused a trusted position? He was the no. 2 guy at the FBI at the time. How in the world can anyone blame a man for blowing the whistle on something so heineous as was Nixon and his staff???
Good for him, there should be more people like him.

Ahem, fellas. Authorizing FBI agents to "break-in" to peoples' offices or residences is a felony crime, also known as burglary. And when you're the # 2 guy at the FBI, it's also done under color of authority which is another felony no-no. This alone makes him a felon. And if you read the above quote from the original article in the first post, Felt was a "convicted" felon which means he either pled guilty or no contest or was tried and found guilty by a jury of the above authorizations to break-in to peoples' offices and/or residences.
As for how he handled his deep throat information, the appropriate avenue for handling such knowledge of Nixon's crime would be to bring such information before a Federal Grand Jury or before a Senate or House Investigation Committee. It is not appropriate for a law enforcement person to arbitrarily decide to just let the press handle a criminal investigation. He compromised any possible criminal investigation and did not do his duty to bring forward a prosecution.
