At the time, their numbers were negligable and they were stupid. Today their numbers are growing and they are still stupid, in the political sense. You can't take away an entitlement and not expect to be driven from office. You may very well be right in taking away the entitlement, but if you expect to survive, politically, you better have a plan to make the majority of people think it was their idea in the first place.
