Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Until the ridiculously redundant automatic appeals process is streamlined you won't see much reduction in the average wait on Death Row anytime soon .

I figure that since this is the age of CSI by the time you get to court it's pretty much a foregone conclusion that "you did it" . I'd say one year of appeals would be plenty , a newer technology might actully crop up that frees you . After the year is up if you haven't raised a reasonable doubt then off to the back of the courthouse you go for a nine in the brain stem . Quick , clean , and painless .

There was a movie once, futuristic setting, and at one point the radio said " criminal caught this morning, convicted at noon, senteced at 2 and lethally injected at 4 pm "

That would be a great thing for our judicial system. Fast, swift justice. And no paroling either. No plea bargaining. You get the sentence you're suppose to get, end of story.

the longer i live in the USA, the more i like the justice system in Thailand. when the judge dropped the gavel down in a capital offense case and said guilty, you had 2 choices-- do you want to be hung tomorrow morning, or shot tomorrow morning. and every tv station in the country had to carry the execution!! there was very little capitol crime comitted, but i did see a hanging and a firing squad execution on armed forces tv while i was stationed there. quick and doesn't cost the taxpayers out the nose to let the guilty live in luxury qhile filing appeal after appeal. Let them rot in a cage. I want to see them alive so they can suffer in solitude until natural death takes them.

They need to streamline the appeals process down to less then a year, in this day and age it is rare to see someone get the death penalty unless they are guilty. Do not get me wrong, I am sure there will still be a very small percentage of innocents executed, but if you were innocent would you rather spend 20 years in a cell waiting for execution or 1 year?

If I were innocent my most fervent hope would be that those CSI folks I mentioned would figure that out well before I even hit the courtroom Taz ...

From my POV , even if we execute an innocent from time to time because investigative technology or techniques weren't available that might have saved them at the time I could live with that even if I happened to be the poor sod in question . I'd sacrifice myself to keep 100,000 killers or baby rapers under the dirt with me . Those are acceptable losses where I stand . 100,000KBR/1 innocent , yeah , I could live with that .

Most innocents aren't that selfless, not to mention that executing the wrong person goes entired against the grain of the Constitution.

Perhaps , but the Constitution also can't anticipate that there might not be a conclusive way to prove your innocence beyond reasonable doubt . "Reasonable doubt" is pretty nebulous to begin with , evidence is usually pretty cut and dried . We're very close now to the time when there will be no doubt , and I will cheer in the street when that day arrives . Until then , my POV stands .

I agree about reasonable doubt. The thing that gets me is the prosecutors will build a case from nothing and fight tooth and nail for a conviction. I think politics, not justice, is the name of the game in some murder cases.
