For those of us from the lower 48, what is the best way to enter Quebec? From down here (Louisiana) I can drive to either Michigan or Buffalo, NY. Dave, do you enter Ontario and drive to Quebec that way from your location in Michigan? Each time I plan the route through MapQuest <http://www.mapquest.com/> it takes me through New York. Whichever way is "shorter" and has better roads. And as a southern boy, I am forewarned about Yankee highway troopers. I will be bringing firearms and lots of ammunition. Of course, all will be properly stowed and encased. I should probably install the action locks I received from both Ruger and Browning for transport in the cases just to be sure. I also have the website address for pre-registering your firearms prior to entering Canada; but I am wary of Pennsylvania and New York troopers.
As long as you dont speed through PA you'll be OK. Our troopers are a real pain about speeding but if your guns are cased they wont give you any hassle. New York gun laws are a bit tougher but long guns are basically no problem. DONT DONT DONT even think about taking a handgun. It will make you a guest of New york state for a minimum of a year. If you happen to get through New York with a handgun I've heard Canada will be worse. I've been searched thoroughly twice at the Canadian border for handguns while on my annual June fishing trip. It wasn't fun and they made a mess of the vehicle. It may be coincidence, but it hasn't happened since we were told to remove any pro gun or NRA stickers. No NRA hats, shirts and dont wear camo when you go through the border gates.
Do remenber to have your permit paperwork and your 50 bucks per gun ready for your permit. Be SURE that you know the ownership trail is clean on any gun you bring.
A friend was in a group with a guy whose house had been robbed and his guns stolen. Some of which were recovered later. When he got to the border with his recovered gun it apparently still showed up on some database as stolen. the were there a long time getting that one straighened out.

suburbans shouldnt be that hard to find to rent. most of the vehicles up there believe it or not are front wheel drive mini vans . the local indians seem to love them. there are also alot of chevy suburbans and pick ups that quebec hydro power use in there fleet. i was told they stock chevy parts at there repair hubs so if i were to rent id go with the chevy. look at one with a roof rack and a hitch if possible. you could always buy a rack and put one on just for the hunt although the rental company might not like it just clean the blood off the vehicle before you return it

I appreciate the heads-up. I just joined the NRA a month ago, and the chances of my wearing one of their hats or sporting a NRA bumper sticker were very good until that advice.

If you are coming from Louisiana I would go up I-65 through Indianapolis or you could cut over from Louisville to I-75 and go north to Sault Ste. Marie. You can do a Map-Quest from there to Matagami. It's not too hard from there. The Mirage website has a map that gives you a good general idea of the James Bay Region but I'm not sure if it will print very well. I made copies of a map of the area and could send you one if you send me your address. It' not something that would scan well. I just got home from spending some time in your neck of the woods, two more days than planned because of flights being cancelled because of Ivan. I was in New Orleans for the National Safety Council. they are what you call thin skinned animals and dont require much to put them down. i used winchester ballistic silver tips on my 308 semi 742 remington but my brother took his with the federal premium 160 nosler partitions. he shoots the 7mm and they go down quick with that round and are worth spending a little more for. practice as much as you can before you go and although you probably wont have to shoot that far if you can set some targets out at 250 yds to see how the long distance works for you.
Takin a 270 and a bow. Gonna shoot the first one with the 270 and then bowhunt a bit.
Hey just thought of another question.... we are staying over at KM 381 on the James bay Rd. Iffn we get in early, is it OK to hunt a bit that day? And for that matter, our hunt is 4 nites and 3 days. Does anyone hunt a bit after checking out and before heading down the road?
