I saw a program years ago on Loyd M. He was a poacher who called himself a guide. His big claim to fame was stealing a set of huge antlers from an Edmonton taxidermist and stuck them on a 90 lb deer from a New mexico game farm. Laying claim to the size of deer there and using the pic in their ad's. He got fined but still continued to poach long after that. I have the video Alberta monarchs and it's pretty good, all rifle however but good tips on going after big alberta deer. R. Thornberry is the host in that film. Anyone have the Sask. hunting films they advertise in Big Buck? I was thinking of getting some of those but want some feedback first.

JD, do youmean "Bentley Cobins" vids? If you can stand watching him chew his lip during the damn thing they do have some VERY nice animals to view. However many find him far more_____(fill in the blank) than Chuck Adams!!!!
Primos Truth Elk videos are about the only ones I buy regularily.I however see a lot on TV with WildTV now and haven't found one I really enjoy 100% but they have their moments. I guessI justprefer shooting it with the boys &/or getting out scouting to motivate me.
So how goes the season prep all? What is our 06' look like (hunts planned, animal situation, etc)? Been awhile, hope all is well. Second thought maybe we should start a 2006 thread to keep in touch, share, etc. What you think???

It was Lloyd Mcm who had the run ins with the law, not Russell Thornberry.
I believe Lloyd started out as a good outfitter/guide and ran afowl of the law. I knew a fellow who did some guiding and he said there was a lot of "temptation" to bend the rules. He said that rich hunters who had already payed big $ for a hunt would sometimes push a wad of bills accross the table an say "I really, reallywant to go home with a BIG trophy, if you know what I mean,(wink)". After awhile bending the rules would become easier and breaking the law would follow. I am not saying this is OK, just that I understand how it could happen.
I think it's the one Saskabush mentioned. They are a full page add in big Buck and there are about 11 volumes right now. Skeeter...prep? who has time for prep??? I'm hoping my dumb luck and great skillwill put me on a 170 class whitetail this year. With the little guy almost walking now doesn't give me a ton of free time any more. Wife knows that Sept. is right around the corner so she's going to be a widow for the next little while.

I own several of them and overall i'd agree with Skeeter. There are lots of big deer in his videos (especially mulies) but the video quality, narrative and production values areamateur at best. That said, I do enjoy seeing video and hunts shot in the same area that I grew up hunting. One warning i'd pass onabout the earlier videos in the series is that they tend to do a lot of drives and pushes. Without passing judgement on anybody's chosen method of hunting I found that the number of 2+ shot kills shown in the early videos was a little unsettling. Also, there are several scenes where you know d*mn well the deer was wounded and never recovered. It seems that as the series has progressed and they have discovered how to use funnels and baiting to get better footageof undisturbed deer.
Lloyd M was the guy that got busted or printing tags for his hunters then cancelling them and printing them again. This basically gave the hunters the chance to shoot multiple deer with tags that appeared valid. It was a routine check stop that finally busted him. I can't believe that he and his family arestill allowed to operate an outfit.
Thornberry was one of thepioneers of outfitting in Alberta. I don't think he was ever caught for anything. I have heard (heresay) from friends in the Provost area (part of the old golden triangle that Thornberry "discovered") that he was not well liked by land owners and essentially burned his bridges in many areas whichmay bewhy he returned to the states.
Thanks Sask. I'll look to see if I can rent them from the local bow shop instead of buy them. I gotta agree with you, it's nice to see hunts in our back yard as opposed to down south somewhere where it's just not the same as AB/Sask.

Yeah, most of those videos are shot within an hour from Saskatoon. I've always found that nothing soothesthe pre/post season itchbeter than watching videos from an area you know. Texas or Mississippi just don't do it for me. I got a digital video camera last fall and I plan on fiming some hunts this year. I think it would be cool to be able torelive my hunts for years to come.
Yeah, that game preserve does provide some good footage for him. It's made him a few $$bucks over the years too. I'd be interested to know how many videos he's sold.
