Default Nikon BDC

A local store is having a sale and I was looking at a 3-9x to put on one of my .30-06's. Some of the scopes have the Nikon Bullet Drop Compensator on them. Can someone explain if this works?? And how it works with so many variables involved? Is it just designed to get you close? Or is it actually an accurate system? Any info is appreciated! Thanks!

Depending on the caliber, the crosshair is for 100 yards, the next line down is for 200 yards, etc.

Different calibers might use the next line down for 300 yards instead of 200 (flatter/faster shooting calibers).

I use them on all my scoped rifles.

I understand how it functions, but how well does it work? Are they consistent? Can you go to a range and hit a gong at each hundred yard mark out to 500 yards?

Only one way to know..........................???

Get to the range with your gun's favorite ammo and shoot it at those distances.

BTW - you might want to ask yourself if you're consistant ? LOL

I'm consistent, thats not a problem. I'm actually getting this rifle set up for my sister on her birthday. And I figured this scope might be good for her. She is a pretty good shot as well and practices with me alot. I just hate to invest the money into this scope for her, if the recticles are way off....

^^ I maybe came off wrong in that last post. What I meant was, I shoot all the time. And have been for about ten years now. I love to shoot and have gotten proficient. My sister is learning, but I'd like to get her an easy to use set up that'll be good out to 400 yards or so for her. Without having to buy another scope with turrets and another range finder and all that.
Thanks!

I have a BDC scope on my muzzleloader. The best way to see which dot/line to use is to get to the range and test. That's about the best advice I can give ya.

# 1 - I'm not a bright guy...............so I believe in "keep it simple stupid"

So, if I can have a reticle that has a "base line" as to which crosshair to use for what distance; that's a good thing.

#2 - Since I'm not a bright guy and when I get an opportunity to take a "longer" shot I don't normally have the time to break-out a calculator.

#3 - With my Burris anyway, they provide a chart of most of the common calibers as to which crosshair to hold for what distance.

For example; yesterday I was using my .204, so the chart said to use the main crosshair for 100 yards (if sighted in at 100 yards), the second crosshair for 250 yards and the third crosshair for 400 yards.............
(.204 has a PBR using a 32gr. bullet of 287 yds)

What I ment by; Are you consistent ?

Most modern rifles/ammo will out shoot our abilities.

Put your rifle in a good gun vise and you will see what I mean (given you have the right gun/ammo combination).....................1" MOA is great for any hunting situation !!!

2" would still be okay - LOL (most PH's use a pie plate to test their clients).

Just trying to help..............nothing can replace testing it at a range at each distance though.

I have a Burris with this. I really like the looks of it but can't comment on how accurate it is at further distances than 100 yards as I don't have anywhere to target shoot that's longer than 100 yards by much. The two places I usually go are 100 yards maybe 105 or so max and the other has maybe 120 yards or so. As said above it came with a chart though that tells you which line to use for what distance depending of what caliber and what grain bullet you are shooting.
