Having made the mistake of trying to put a $60 scope on a 30-06 and watching the scopes "zero" go all over the place from the recoil, I have one final question. Does this permanently damage the scope or can it still be used on a .22? Just curious----John
Sounds like a mounting issue, you want scope mounts as solid and as low as possible this is the weakest part of a shooting system. A $60 scope however is getting what you paid for, on a 30-06 try weaver mounts with a $160-$250 nikon or bushnell elite you'll get the results your looking for.
The cheapo scopes have cheapo internals... erector springs, wire reticles (likely), crap lens, etc. I just avoid them altogether. You can certainly try them on light kicking rifles for paper punching, but I'd not hunt with one.

The mounts are the top of the line from CZ made for the 550 series rifles--actually the scope rings cost far more than the scope--But you are all right and I have my priorities in line now and am setting aside some funds for a decent scope built to take the recoil. Iv'e been looking at the Leupolds, Burris, Nikon and the high end Bushnells--I think when Iv'e narrowed it down some and am ready to buy, I'll tell you what I'm looking at and get some pros and cons--Thanks guys for your help---John
Look for lifetime Warranty - only pay for it once !!!

i must say i have seen just about as many high priced scopes go bad as cheaper ones. i have a bushnell sportview that i bought new in the early 80's its worn out a few rifles and still does a great job. now, that being said you there is alot to be gained by buying a quality scope. they are less likely to fog up,you can usually see better in low light conditions and you get less glare. plus you will get a better warranty if something does go wrong in most cases. but ,then again i have 2 4x12 40 swift rifle scopes that i payed 100.00 each for that have one of the best warranties out there. buy what you can afford. in good light you can kill plenty of deer with a 29.95 simmons 8pt. but on a rainy morning at the crack of dawn you my need a 400.00 scope to get that monster buck.
