Default Bushnell 6-24X40 For Savage 7mm Rem Mag

I was considering putting the Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24X40 with side focus on my Savage 7mm Rem Mag. Would this be a good choice scope for the rifle? I will be hunting on a clear cut power line that has some very long shooting lanes.

The Elite 4200's are good scopes, but I'd say 24X on the top end is excessive. The exit pupil will suck, and it will be hard to hold wobble free. I'd suggest a 12X at the top maximum. Good luck in your selection.

Not really the scope I would go for on a magnum big game rifle. More a varmint or target scope in my opinion. You could get away with less scope for less money or less scope and better quality. Like say a Conquest or something in a more normal power range.

Snipers use 10X out to outlandish distances, no reason why it wouldn't work on a deer sized target at 400 yards or so.

Thanks for your opinions and advice. This is what I like about forums, you get to ask questions and see things through other peoples eyes before you make a purchase on pricey items. Thanks again for the replies.

I have a 3.5-10 on my 7wsm and its plenty. I agree that 12 power would be more than enough for your gun.

You would be better off just using the 3200 Elite 5 x 15 x 50

More lense - more light transmission, better choice for close and long range shooting.

That's what I use on my rifles and I usually only use 5 - 6 x when I am in my stand.

Good rifle and good scope.

Let us know how you make out next year.

You can always crank it up.

I would lean toward the Elite 2.5x10x50 at about $460 over the Elite 6x24x40 at about $530. I use a scope set at 3 or 4 power in low light times and the limited 6 power low side you are considering won't be as bright.

I just purchased one two day's ago for a 223. I realize the 24X is a little more than what is needed, but I found one on the net for $399+3.50 for shipping. It was $40 cheaper than the 4X16-so I went with it. Also they did not have the 4X16 in stock anywhere.

The 24X is a bit much for the upper end but the 6X should work fine for you at the lower end. The Elite is actually a great value for the price. You get a lot with the scope including full multi-coated lenses, and positive click adjustments-not friction adjustments. Buy this scope with confidence.

If you want to know where I bought it-PM me. Tom.

In my opinion the 6-24 is a bit much as others have already mentioned. At 24X I would expect that exit pupil to be really poor. I would say for long range shooting on deer sized game something topping out at 10X or 12X is plenty. Maybe something like a 4-12 or 3-10 ??

Unless you are stuck on the Bushnell (which has a good reputation no doubt) , give the Zeiss Conquest line a good look too. A good bit more pricey, but I am of the opinion worth the extra $$$.
